Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to visit Nigeria later this month in what critics are calling an "unofficial royal tour", and it has led to speculation on UK betting sites about where they might go next.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are known to be heading to Nigeria after accepting an invitation from Christopher Gwabin Musa, the country's chief of defence staff, who asked the pair if they would like to take part in "cultural activities" in the nation.

Defence spokesperson Brigadier General Tukur Gusau has since expressed his "honour and delight" that Harry and Meghan - who stepped down as working members of the Royal Family in 2020 - will be in Nigeria this month.

Harry is due in the UK to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, where he is expected to attend a service at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on May 8.

However, Meghan is not expected to head to the UK, but will join her husband in Nigeria just days later.

The proposed trip has caused some controversy among royal experts, with royal biographer Tom Bower telling MailOnline: "Playing the 'Royal Card' has become Meghan's and Harry's income lifeline."

Royal author Phil Dampier said: "It's ironic that the late Queen wanted Harry and Meghan to very much be her ambassadors throughout the Commonwealth and spread goodwill among its 50 or so nations, but they didn't want to do it as royals."

However, Harry and Meghan have their own reasons for visiting Nigeria.

In 2022, the Duchess revealed on their podcast Archetypes that she had learned she was 43 per cent Nigerian following a genealogy test.

What's more, there are other family connections - Harry's mother Princess Diana visited Nigeria with Harry and Prince William's father, King Charles, in the early 1990s.

It is just 1/4 that either Harry or Meghan wear green and white - the colours of the Nigerian flag - on their first day in the country, and 1/2 that Meghan wears an outfit by a Nigerian designer during the trip. But where will they head to next?

Norway Hot Favourite

While Norway is renowned for being cold in certain parts, the country is the 2/1 hot favourite on specials betting sites to be Harry and Meghan's next visit of choice, on their so-called "unofficial royal tour".

In January, the pair went on a surprise visit to Jamaica for the premiere of Bob Marley: One Love, but could their love of the Scandinavian nation take them back there?

In 2017, the Duke and Duchess spent their first new year as a couple with a week in Tromsö, and they even spent their first Valentine's Day as a married couple apart because Harry visited British servicemen and women in the Norwegian town of Bardufoss.

Norway also provided a first for Harry's late mother Diana.

The Princess embarked on her first solo overseas tour in Norway in February 1984, when she attended a performance of Carmen by the London City Ballet, of which she was Patron, so an upcoming return would appear to make sense for the Duke and Duchess.

Harry And Meghan Down Under Again?

Diana also headed on a tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1983 with Charles and an infant Prince William, and the former royal couple went to Australia for the bicentenary celebrations in 1988.

Harry and Meghan are no strangers to the country either, after heading there in October 2018 for their first official royal tour since tying the knot in May 2018.

However, it has since been claimed that trip was the "turning point" for their relationship with the Royal Family.

In their bombshell Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, which was released in December 2022, Harry said he thought Buckingham Palace started to feel his wife was "stealing the limelight" on the jaunt.

He said: "The issue is when someone who's marrying in, who should be a supporting act, is then stealing the limelight, or is doing the job better than the person who was born to do this - it upsets people, it shifts the balance."

The same episode of their Netflix documentary also compared Meghan's time Down Under to Diana's, where Aussie fans were desperate to speak to the late princess, as they were to the Duchess in 2018.

Harry and Meghan underwent 76 engagements during their time in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, while Meghan was pregnant with Archie, who was born on May 6, 2019.

The pair may want to head back Down Under on their own terms at some point, and it is 3/1 on betting apps they do so following their Nigeria trip.

Duke And Duchess' Italian Adventure?

Should Harry and Meghan continue to follow in Diana's footsteps, then the couple may head to Italy next, which is 4/1 on new betting sites.

Harry and William went as youngsters when they joined their parents at the end of their tour to Italy in 1985.

Meghan was even linked to an appearance at Italy's leading music festival, Sanremo Music Festival, this year, but she isn't thought to have attended.

What's more, Harry and Meghan might like to frequent Japan (5/1) or South Korea (5/1), where Diana and Charles spent their last joint overseas visit in 1992.

The Duke and Duchess are also no strangers to South Africa after they took their then-four-month-old son Archie there in September 2019.

It is 6/1 that they return to South Africa next, while it's 7/1 they visit either Angola, Malawi or Botswana, the three countries Harry visited solo after the pair's South Africa trip.

Other countries that could be on the couple's 2024 itinerary include Brazil (8/1) - where Diana previously went, and Harry visited in 2012 and 2014 - and India (10/1).

Meghan has been to India as part of her charity work, and Diana went there and nearby Nepal (10/1), where Harry visited in March 2016 to help rebuild a secondary school and visit a Hydropower Project.
