As time goes by, the sting of the Toronto Blue Jays loss to the Minnesota Twins in the American League Wild Card series is a little less raw.
Now the Jays' organization and fans are turning their attention to next season.
Tough Loss Leads To Serious Questions
The debate in Toronto centers on the team's use of analytics against the Twins, and how to balance that information against a manager’s “feel” for a game.
This was on display in Game 2 for all the wrong reasons when Jays manager John Schneider inexplicably pulled a dealing Jose Berrios after just 47 pitches, only to stick to some pre-game plan of getting left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi in to face left-handed batters. This forced Twins manager Rocco Baldelli to dip into his bench, swapping out the left-handed batters with pinch hitters.
Is Don Mattingly The Next Manager?
The Berrios move was disastrous and turned the tide of the game, giving the Twins a confidence boost. The end result of course was 2-0 loss. And a team with a $213 million payroll — ninth in the majors, according to Spotrac — meekly stepped off the stage.
With all their analytics, the Jays are going home anyway. The Twins moved on to facie the Houston Astros in the American League playoffs.
So who gets fired in Toronto?
Surely someone will walk the plank for the debacle.
Will it be Schneider?
The hitting coach, Guillermo Martinez, is a candidate because of a weak offence on full display all season and in the Wild Card series (.227 average against the Twins, .214 average with RISP, one run, one XBH).
