Canada is Represented in Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix and Indy 500; How Should You Bet?

Sunday is one of the marquee days of open-wheel racing with two premier races taking place. The action starts with the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix and is followed by the IndyCar Indianapolis 500.

Canada has two drivers in each race, with Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi competing in Monaco and Devlin DeFrancesco and Dalton Kellett on the grid for the Indy 500.

Here’s a betting outlook for each of the Canadian drivers.

Monaco Grand Prix

Before last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, there was reason for optimism for Lance Stroll and the Aston Martin Formula 1 team.

The new upgrades they took to Spain brought out comparisons to the current Red Bull car, and many wondered if it would result in improved performance.

Well, not really. Stroll finished 15th and his teammate Sebastian Vettel was 11th, and that includes two DNFs from their competitors.

A win is probably out of the question for Stroll, and he has the third-longest odds to record a Top 10 finish and record a point at +330.

The driver with the next longest odds to record a top 10 is Alex Albion at +350. This is to show how far off Latifi is. Latifi is +1800 to finish in the top 10.

In 45 career races, he has only finished in the points twice and hasn’t been better than 14th this season.

I would look to wager on Latifi Not to Be Classified at +275. This means you’re hoping he doesn’t finish the race.

Monaco is a street circuit with winding corners, tight walls and no room for run-off. At a similar track this season, Latifi crashed twice at Jeddah by spinning out by himself — once in qualifying and the second crash came just 14 laps into the race for a DNF.

Betting Latifi to crash out or have a mechanical problem might not inspire national pride, but it could benefit your wallet.

Indianapolis 500

Calling DeFrancesco and Kellett longshots for the Indy 500 would be putting it mildly.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Kellett has the longest odds to win the race at +20000 and DeFrancesco has the eighth-longest at +7000.

DeFrancesco is in his rookie season and finished 17th in Alabama for his best result. Kellett is in his third season in IndyCar and has never finished better than 12th. So yeah, there’s not a lot to go with here.

Backing any Canadian drivers to win doesn't seem like a smart move, and unlike F1, there aren’t unique props to bet on for each driver. Most sportsbooks don’t even include DeFrancesco or Kellett in its head-to-head driver matchups, so you can’t even bet on Canadian drivers in that format.

Unless you feel like donating some money to a sportsbook, DeFrancesco and Kellett do not appear worth your money this weekend.
