Canadian Oscar Winners: Will Canada Have a 2025 Academy Award Winner?

The 2025 Academy Awards take place on Sunday with the best and brightest of the Canadian movie industry heading to Hollywood.

In total, 70 Canucks have left the Academy Awards with an Oscar, and there's a chance to add to that collection with eight nominations in six different categories, including Best Picture.

Vancouver's Samantha Quan was a producer on the comedy drama Anora, which is the odds-on favorite in the Best Picture market on betting sites.

Canada also has chances of an Oscar-winner in five smaller categories with nominees for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.

Canadian 2025 Oscar Nominations

  • Best Costume Design - Linda Muir (Nosferatu)
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling - Traci Loader (Nosferatu)
  • Best Picture - Samantha Quan (Anora) & Tanya Lapointe and Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two)
  • Best Production Design - Patricia Cuccia (The Brutalist) and Patrice Vermette & Shane Vieau (Dune: Part Two)
  • Best Sound - David Giammarco & Paul Massey (A Complete Unknown)
  • Best Visual Effects - Paul Lambert, Stephen James, & Rhys Salcombe (Dune: Part Two)

2025 Oscars Betting: Best Picture

The last Canadian to scoop the Oscar for Best Picture was J. Miles Dale, who took home the award in 2017 for his role as producer on The Shape of Water, a movie shot in Toronto.

He became the fifth Canadian winner in that category, joining Paul Haggis (Crash), Albert Ruddy (Million Dollar Baby & The Godfather), James Cameron (Titanic), and Jack Warner (My Fair Lady).

Quan is bidding to become the first female Canadian recipient of the Best Picture award and is odds-on with the majority of betting apps to achieve that goal.

Anora is a best-price of -175 on BetVictor to add Best Picture to the Palme d'Or it collected at Cannes.

But Quan isn't the only Canadian fighting to win the Oscar with Tanya Lapointe and Denis Villeneuve nominated for Dune: Part Two.

Quebec-born director Villeneuve has been nominated four times for an Oscar previously but has never won and is a long shot on established and new betting sites to break his duck here with Dune: Part Two a +10000 chance to be named Best Picture.

2025 Oscars Betting: Best Actor

Whether a Canadian has ever won the Best Actor prize depends on whether you view Brendan Fraser as American or from north of the border.

Born in the United States to Canadian parents, Fraser won the Best Actor award for The Whale in 2022.

Before the dual nationality Fraser took home the honor, Canadians had received eight nominations but no Oscars, including two misses for Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson in 2006 and La La Land in 2016.

Canadians have had more luck in the Best Supporting Actor category, chalking up three wins, the last of which was achieved by the great Christopher Plummer in 2011 for his work in Beginners.

There are no Canadians up for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor this year, with bookmakers forecasting Adrien Brody will win the Best Actor prize for his role The Brutalist.

Broady is -227, while Kieran Culkin is even shorter on Ontario sportsbooks for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding performance in A Real Pain.

2025 Oscars Betting: Best Actress

Three Canadian actresses have won the Oscar for Best Actress, but the last of those successes was Marie Dressler for Min And Bill in 1930-31.

Since then, nominations have been few and far between with Elliot Page, formerly Ellen Page, the last person to receive a nomination for their role in the seminal coming-of-age drama Juno in 2007.

The Best Supporting Actress category hasn't brought a great deal of success either with Anna Paquin the only Canadian winner of the award for The Piano in 1993 when she was just 11. However, Paquin holds New Zealand citizenship so the legitimacy of this win as one for Canada is again disputed.

This year's Best Actress prize is expected to go to Demi Moore, who is odds-on and shortening all the time in the Oscars betting for her performance in The Substance.

2025 Oscars Betting: Best Director

Nine different Canadians have been nominated for the Best Director award, but only James Cameron has taken home the prize for Titanic in 1997.

Cameron has since been nominated again for Avatar in 2009, while Villeneuve was the last Canadian to be up for the award having received a recognition for Arrival in 2016.

Sean Baker, director of Anora, is the favorite for the Oscar in 2025, but it's thought to be a close fight between him and Brady Corbet, who directed The Brutalist.
