The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are around the corner! This is the most exciting time of the year for television shows and the competition is fierce in 2022. Your favourite shows, actors and actresses may take home an Emmy on Monday night.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are the most prestigious television awards ceremony in the world, with shows from the likes of HBO, Netflix, Hulu and more. Last Sunday, the Creative Arts Emmys announced the 2022 winners for artistic and technical achievement categories. On Sept. 12, the 74th Primetime Emmy Award winners will be announced. Below we'll go through the Emmy predictions in the most buzzing categories with the favourites to win the Primetime Emmy Awards and the best betting odds.

Outstanding Drama Series

Nominees:

  • Succession (HBO)
  • Squid Game (Netflix)
  • Better Call Saul (AMC)
  • Severance (Apple TV)
  • Ozark (Netflix)
  • Stranger Things (Netflix)
  • Euphoria (HBO)
  • Yellowjackets (Showtime)

One of the top contenders for the best drama series category is HBO's Succession. This satirical drama series following the Roy family has received the highest (25) nominations in various categories this year and has already won it in 2020. Competing against Succession is Squid Game, which has a chance to make Emmy history as the first South Korean TV show to take home the award. Squid Game already bagged four awards with their Creative Arts wins. It's the first non-English language series to be nominated and would be another record if it wins the Emmy Awards. Squid Game broke Netlfix's record and became the most watched show on the platform.

Perhaps, it might be time for Breaking Bad's prequel 'Better Call Saul' to shine. This AMC drama has been nominated every season and it may finally take home the prize. After all, Breaking Bad took home the best drama awards for its final two seasons. Also in the mix are HBO's teen drama series, Euphoria as well as the inaugural seasons of two shows: Severance and Yellowjackets competing against another two successful and popular shows from Netflix: Ozark's final season and Stranger Things.

Predicted Winner: Succession

Outstanding Comedy Series

Nominees:

  • Ted Lasso (Apple TV)
  • Abbott Elementary (ABC)
  • Barry (HBO)
  • Hacks (HBO)
  • Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime Video)
  • What We Do In The Shadows (FX)
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)

The front runner here is the 2021 winner Ted Lasso. Last year, the sports comedy broke the record for the most number of nominations in its first season and has received just as many this year. Another good nominee in the running is Abbott Elementary, which has been a hit and is a feel-good show of the 2022 Emmys for its freshman year. Abbott Elementary is certainly the dark horse among this year's contenders. Barry and Hacks may also have a chance at grabbing the Emmy since both had their strongest season yet. While 'Barry' has been nominated each season, 'Hacks' was the runner-up in the 2021 Emmys and has picked up more nominations this year which is positive for the HBO comedy series.

Odds are quite low for two of the TV shows which are 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.' Both shows have passed their prime. FX vampire mockumentary 'What We Do In The Shadows' is more likely to do well in the writing category. Meanwhile, the inaugural season of 'Only Murders in the Building' has picked up 17 nominations and has a fair shot of doing well here.

Predicted Winner: Ted Lasso

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Nominees:

  • Jung-Jae Lee (Squid Game)
  • Brian Cox (Succession)
  • Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul)
  • Jeremy Strong (Succession)
  • Adam Scott (Severance)
  • Jason Bateman (Ozark)

This might be the year for Jung-Jae Lee with his performance as Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game. He is considered one of the best actors in South Korea and could become the first Asian to win. It may finally be the time for Bob Odenkirk to take home the Emmy for his role as Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman. Having received 12 nominations as producer and lead actor in AMC's Better Call Saul, it might be one of his last chances of winning as only the first part of the Better Call Saul finale is eligible this year.

Succession's leading men are once again rivals in this category for the third season. Father-son tension has earned Brian Cox (as Logan Roy) and Jeremy Strong (as Kendell Roy) another nomination this year. Jeremy Strong won in 2020 making him a favourite to snag the award again and beating his co-star. In the outstanding supporting actor category, there is a similar situation with Matthew Macfadyen, Kieran Culkin and Nicholas Braun for their roles in Succession.

It is Jason Bateman's last chance to grab the Emmy for Ozark's series finale and it is Adam Scott's first nomination for the inaugural season of Severance. Bateman has already received several nominations for Ozark as producer, actor and director and has so far only taken home the Emmy for outstanding directing in 2019.

Predicted winner: Jung-Jae Lee or Brian Cox

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Nominees:

  • Bill Hader (Barry)
  • Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso)
  • Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building)
  • Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building)
  • Donald Glover (Atlanta)
  • Nicholas Hoult (The Great)

This year's nominees include an interesting mix. Bill Hader, a favourite among TV academy members, could end up with his third Emmy for Barry, having already won two Emmy Awards (in 2018 and 2019). Jason Sudeikis could pick up his second win for his role as Ted Lasso. In 2021, Sudeikis won both Emmys for lead actor and producer of Ted Lasso. Alternatively, it could prove to be Donald Glover's chance to snatch a second Emmy for his role in Atlanta's penultimate season. You may know him as Childish Gambino, Glover wears many hats and his talent has been acknowledged with his several writing, directing, producing and acting nominations any of which may lead to a win.

Other nominees include comedy veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short who have great chemistry on the Hulu show 'Only Murders in the Building' along with their co-star and fellow producer Selena Gomez. However, the odds look more favourable for Short and his chuckle-worthy one-liners and mannerisms.

If the streak of past winners will be broken, it may well be by a newcomer - Nicholas Hoult for his role in 'The Great' whose surprising nomination may generate more buzz and improve his odds.

Predicted Winner: Bill Hader

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Nominees:

  • Zendaya (Euphoria)
  • Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets)
  • Laura Linney (Ozark)
  • Sandra Oh (Killing Eve)
  • Jodie Comer (Killing Eve)
  • Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show)

Zendaya already won this category in 2020 for her role as Rue in Euphoria, making her the youngest Primetime Emmys winner at just 24 years old. Besides her second lead actress nomination, she has also become the youngest producer to get a nomination. She has a chance to win a second time for an astounding performance and raw portrayal of the troubled drug addict Rue and she is the most likely actress to take home the award on Monday. Her main competition is the dark horse Melanie Lynskey for her role as Shauna in Yellowjackets. Playing a mother riddled with trauma, Melanie may be Yellowjacket's best hope of picking up at least one of the Emmys.

However, the results might be surprising if it goes to Laura Linney in her last chance to win for her role as Wendy Byrde in Ozark's final season, (much like her co-star Jason Bateman). Despite being a darling among Emmy voters, with eight nominations, her polarizing character has received conflicting reception from viewers. Julia Garner is more likely to win for Ozark in the outstanding supporting actress in a drama series.

The chances of winning are low for the other nominees. Once again Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh are pitted against one another for Killing Eve's season finale. Jodie Comer already won the outstanding lead actress category in 2019 while her co-star has been nominated four times as Eve Polastri and previously five times as Dr. Cristina Yang (Grey's Anatomy) and has yet to win one. Lastly, Reese Witherspoon surprisingly beat co-star Jennifer Aniston with her nomination for The Morning Show. Witherspoon has the lowest chance to win in this category.

Predicted Winner: Zendaya

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Nominees:

  • Jean Smart (Hacks)
  • Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary)
  • Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel)
  • Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant)
  • Issa Rae (Insecure)
  • Elle Fanning (The Great)

This year may be a turning point for this category. Jean Smart, the winner of the 2021 Emmy, has the best odds this year. If she continues her hot streak, she might follow Veep's leading actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus who won each year she was nominated. Quinta Brunson comes in strong with her performance and has become the first black woman in television academy history to receive three nominations in comedy categories for outstanding writing, producing and acting in Abbott Elementary.

Other nominees include Brosnahan, who won the award for Miriam 'Midge' Maisel in 2018 and this is her fourth nomination but this time, she isn't a favourite. Similarly, Issa Rae has been nominated for a third time and Kaley Cuoco for a second time. The likelihood of any of these three winning are low and are also competing with the first-time nominee Elle Fanning for her role as Catherine the Great in the historical comedy.

Predicted Winner: Jean Smart

Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series

Nominees:

  • The White Lotus (HBO)
  • Dopesick (Hulu)
  • The Dropout (Hulu)
  • Inventing Anna (Netflix)
  • Pam & Tommy (Hulu)

The best contender for this category is by far The White Lotus (HBO) which has picked up 20 nominations, particularly in the supporting actress and supporting actor in a limited or anthology series lists. The only TV series that comes close to The White Lotus, a satire at a Hawaiian resort, is Hulu's The Dropout. This series based on a real-life scam story has a better chance than the disappointing show 'Inventing Anna' following the story of Anna Delvey. Both Amanda Seyfried and Julia Garner respectively have deservedly received nominations in the outstanding lead actress in a limited series category. Similarly, in the best actor categories, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Keaton have a better chance of picking up Emmys for their performances in Dopesick rather than in this category. Another true story TV show 'Pam & Tommy' may gain some votes for the nostalgia factor but the odds of winning are slim. Even though last year's winner for limited series, Queen's Gambit, had audiences rooting for a strong female protagonist, this year's female-led shows 'Inventing Anna', 'Pam & Tommy' and 'The Dropout' may not be as successful at getting an Emmy Award for limited series.

Predicted Winner: The White Lotus
