Upcoming Bucks vs. Raptors

The last time the Bucks were in Toronto, on Nov. 1, the Raptors blew them out, 130-111, a game that caught everyone off guard. The Bucks were favoured going into that game, as the Raptors were 1-3, and there was a lot of debate about how well the team was adapting to new head coach Darko Rajakovic’s system. With a long road trip after that first Bucks game, against some tough opponents, some were predicting a 1-8 start to the season.

Well, it didn’t go that way. The Raptors followed up the big win over the Bucks with road wins over San Antonio and Dallas and are now 5-5 on the season, good for ninth in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks are 6-4 (sixth).
Both teams won their Monday games.  The Raptors began their four-game homestand (Nov. 13-19) with a 23-point comeback win - the fourth largest in franchise history - defeating the Washington Wizards 111-107.

The comeback included a 16-point fourth quarter deficit marking the second largest fourth quarter comeback in franchise history. This is the second time this season that the Raptors have come back from a 20+ point deficit having erased a 22-point deficit in San Antonio on Nov. 5, which also included a franchise record-tying 17-point fourth quarter comeback. Forward Pascal Siakam led the way Monday with 39 points (15-24 FG).

The Bucks had lost their two previous games but defeated the Chicago Bulls 118-109, led by forward Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 35 points (13-22 FG) and 11 rebounds.

The big issue tonight comes down to injuries. Will O.G. Anunoby play for the Raptors? Anunoby, according to a Sportsnet column this morning by Michael Grange, has been one of the best defensive players in the NBA so far - maybe the league’s top defender. Every game he’s slotted in to guard the opponent’s top player. That would be Antetokounmpo for the Bucks.

Anunoby missed the Wizards’ game with a finger laceration and is so far not listed as starting for tonight. ESPN says he’s “doubtful” for the game. SG Gary Trent Jr., a key bench player, is also listed as doubtful because of a foot issue.

The big injury on the Bucks’ side is PF Jae Crowder, out after suffering a left adductor and abdominal tear.

Prediction #1: Outcome

Our money this morning is on the Bucks to win, to erase the Nov. 1 memory, but also because of the injuries to Anunoby, and secondarily Trent. Anunoby has been a beast so far – scoring a season-high 26 against the Dallas Mavericks in that win Nov. 8, averaging 16.4 points per game so far, and 51 per cent FG%. Anunoby was named to the 2022-23 NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

Prediction #2: Over/Under

According to Pinnacle: Bucks Over 115.5: 1.84, U 115.5: 2.01; Raptors Over 111.5: 1.90; Under 111.5: 1.95. Again, bouncing off that big game against the Bulls, we expect further big things from Antetokounmpo tonight – even with reports on ESPN that he is day-to-day but probable for tonight, dealing with right calf injury management. Stay tuned to the wires this afternoon about Anunoby’s status. But as of this morning he’s out. Bucks Over is strong.
