NHL Insights

The Leafs are back in a Top 3 divisional playoff spot after pasting the Anaheim Ducks 9-2 at home Saturday night, jumping ahead of Tampa into third place in the Atlantic Division. The Leafs were led Saturday by Auston Matthews, who’s playing out of this world, tallying his sixth hat trick of the season. He has 48 on the season, on pace for 76 goals. Many thought he had a shot at 50 against the Ducks, if head coach Sheldon Keefe hadn’t cut back his ice time in the third period.

🏒 Bet on Maple Leafs vs. Blues at DraftKings 🏒

Ilya Samsonov is listed as probable to start in goal today (11-4-5, two shutouts, 3.25 GAA, .881 SV%). Calle Jarnkrok is still out of the lineup with that finger injury. Nine different Leafs skaters had multi-point games against the Ducks. The Leafs have won three in a row.

Jordan Binnington is listed as probable to start in goal for the Blues (19-17-2, two shutouts, 2.93 GAA, .908 SV%). The Blues had won eight of ten games before losing to the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Saturday and are fighting for a wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

🏒 Bet on Oilers vs. Coyotes at DraftKings 🏒

The Oilers are starting Stuart Skinner in goal (24-11-1- two shutouts, 2.56 GAA and .905 SV%), and are heavily favoured against the Coyotes, losers of nine in a row. The Oilers are coming off 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars Saturday.

The Canucks have Casey DeSmith listed as probable to start in net (7-3-5, two shutouts, 2.67 GAA and a .908 SV%), and had won three in a row before losing to the Jets Saturday night. The Canucks lead the NHL with 80 points – 18-8-4 on the road.

The Jets have been a powerhouse all season as well, winners of three in a row going into today’s game. They’ll likely go with Laurent Brossoit in net (7-4-2, 2.22 GAA, .920 SV%), giving their all-star netminder Connor Hellebuyck the day off. The Flames’ season is fast slipping away, and they will likely be active on the trade front, leading up to the March 8 trade deadline. Jacob Markstrom is the probable starter in net today for Calgary (17-14-2. two shutouts, 2.59 GAA, .914 SV%), mentioned frequently on the trade rumour front.

🏒 Bet on Jets vs. Flames at FanDuel 🏒

Lastly, the Senators head into Tampa with their season fast fading away as well, the last game on the Presidents’ Day sked. They’ll likely go with Joonas Korpisalo in net (13-19-2, two shutouts, 3.41 GAA, .886 SV%) with the Lightning countering with Andrei Vasilevskiy (19-12, one shutout, 2.90 GAA, .899 SV%). The Lightning were embarrassed on home ice Saturday – losing 9-2 to the cross-state Florida Panthers – so they’ll be looking to bounce back from that. After winning four straight games, the Senators have dropped consecutive games to the lowly Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks.

Player Props

On the sports betting front, for the Leafs’ game, according to Fan Duel, Auston Matthews First Goal Scorer (8.50), and Anytime Goalscorer (1.87), as well as William Nylander First Goal Scorer (11.00) are most bet player props.

It’s much the same at BetMGM: Matthews to Score Goal, (1.80), To Score 1st Goal (7.00), and Over 1.5 Points (2.40).

At DraftKings, most bet player props are Matthews Anytime Goalscorer (1.83), Oilers’ Connor McDavid Anytime Goalscorer (1.95), Matthews First Goalscorer (7.00), McDavid First Goalscorer (7.00), Lightning’s Brayden Point Over 2.5 Shots On Goal (1.74), Oilers’ Corey Perry Over 0.5 Points (2.24), McDavid Over 1.5 Points (1.95), McDavid Over 0.5 Assists (1.53), and the Leafs’ Mitch Marner Over 0.5 Assists (1.69).

And at PointsBet Canada, most of the action is on Matthews Anytime Goalscorer (1.83).

Canadian team betting odds: Our picks & predictions

If you’re looking at NHL bets, it should be a good day for Canada’s teams. Go with the Over in Leafs vs. Blues – Matthews is on fire, and so is the Leafs’ powerplay (second in the NHL now, with four goals Saturday night). Back the Canucks at 1.75, even with DeSmith likely starting, with the team giving No. 1 Thatcher Demko the day off. The Oilers will win and beat the spread against the lowly Coyotes. We like the Jets at -1.5 against the Flames, and the Lightning moneyline against Ottawa.
