End of year is always a good time to look back, examining top movies or top TV series of the past 12 months. On the sports betting front, what were some of the top betting trends in 2022?

According to DraftKings – and this isn’t a surprise – in Ontario the most bet teams in the province’s newly regulated market were the Toronto Blue Jays and the Buffalo Bills.

The Blue Jays Get Most of the Canada Betting Action

The Jays are loaded with young stars, with ever-shifting storylines, including the stunning playoff loss to the Seattle Mariners in October’s playoff series. Still they’ve had an active off-season – trading away OF Teoscar Fernandez, OF Lourdes Gurriel, and C Gabriel Moreno, bringing back RP Erik Swanson, OF Daulton Varsho, while signing SP Chris Bassitt and OF Kevin Kiermaier as free agents.

Current World Series odds have the Jays near the top: 13-1, according to DraftKings. The Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres are ahead of them, so this upcoming season should be as equally active on the sports betting front.

The MLB most bet World Series teams by handle tells a different story, according to DraftKings data: Dodgers, Jays, Astros, Padres and Yankees.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ranked No. 4 in MLB most bet AL MVP winners, behind Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels), Aaron Judge (Yankees) and Jose Ramirez (Cleveland Guardians).

The Bills Are Big in Ontario, But Where's the NHL?

The Bills sit among the leaders in the NFL and are positioned to be a dominant team for the next decade. Bills’ Josh Allen was the No. 1 ranked NFL player most bet to win league MVP – followed by the Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, QB Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, QB Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, and QB Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rounding out the Top 5 of most bet teams – Golden State Warriors, Chiefs and Miami Dolphins. No hockey teams were in the Top 10! The Warriors were the only NBA team.

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks was the NBA most bet player to win MVP in Ontario, followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers, and Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Incredibly, the Raptors were the NBA most bet team to win the NBA Finals in DraftKings’ Ontario jurisdiction.

And on the hockey front, the NHL most bet teams to win the Stanley Cup: Tampa Bay Lightning, followed by the Colorado Avalanche, the Maple Leafs, Edmonton and New York Rangers.

Washington’s Alex Ovechkin was the NHL's most bet player by handle and by bets, and Cole Caulfield shots on goal was the NHL most bet player props by bets, Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon shots on goal the NHL most bet player prop by handle.

The NHL teams that lost bettors the most money overall in 2022: Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, Leafs, Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights.  NHL teams that made bettors the most money overall in 2022? Colorado, Arizona Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, and Columbus Bluejackets, in that order.

Someone placed a $700,000 wager on Darryl Sutter winning coach of the year at the 2021-2022 NHL Awards, and walked away with $1.750 million, which was the largest payout on the NHL in 2022.
