Study: More Ontario Players Participating on Regulated iGaming Sites

Ontario last Thursday celebrated the two-year anniversary of an open, competitive, regulated igaming market.

“This is another pivotal milestone in our ongoing work to provide players and businesses with a strong, competitive and safer online gaming environment that meets consumer expectations,” said Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey in a statement. “We look forward to iGaming Ontario's continued success as a global innovator, as a job creator that sustained more than 12,000 jobs in its first year of operation, and as a leader in the online gaming space.”

There are currently 47 registered operators offering 77 regulated sites to Ontarians

To mark the occasion, iGaming Ontario and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario issued an IPSOS study of Ontario players showing that 86.4% of players in Ontario are now participating in igaming on regulated sites (over the preceding three months when they were asked).

The IPSOS study was conducted in February 2024. This represents an increase from the 85.3% of igaming participants who reported playing on regulated sites in a similar study conducted in 2023.

According to Vixio, a global regulatory intelligence company, the Ontario igaming market last year jumped to sixth spot in the world by gross gaming revenue, ahead of markets like Michigan and New York (that includes estimates of the government-owned Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation igaming activity).

“When talking about Ontario’s igaming market, the numbers tell us a lot,” said Heidi Reinhart, iGaming Ontario Board Chair, “but what I’m most proud of are the countless ways that our government partners, operators, responsible gambling experts, players and employees have worked together to help us create a world-class market that is Ontario-made for Ontarians.”

The number of people still using unregulated sites remains a notable challenge for the industry.

The AGCO said in a statement that the study found that 20.1 of those who gambled online the prior three months wagered on a combination of unregulated and regulated sites, while 13.6% did all their betting on unregulated sites. Participants named over 350 unregulated websites they have used.
