DraftKings: Most of the betting action on the Chiefs at 2024 Super Bowl LVIII

Johnny Avello, DraftKings’ director of race and sportsbook operations, and a member of the Sports Betting Hall of Fame, says it’s “surreal” to him that there’s a Super Bowl being played in Las Vegas.
But here we are – the Kansas City Chiefs versus the San Francisco 49ers, this Sunday, 6:30 p.m. EST, at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Chiefs are generating the most sports betting action so far, Avello reports.
“Great, great action so far,” he says. “For us, being in 26 states, that certainly helps. That's a lot of people that want to get a bet down at a certain time. So, it's just been stellar. And that will continue and certainly grow more as we get closer to the game, with most of the money coming in on Saturday and Sunday.
CHIEFS LEADING THE WAY
“If you're looking at tickets, it's the Chiefs. And money is on the Chiefs so far. I think they're the known commodity.”
Avello agrees with those saying that the pop culture hoopla, specifically around Taylor Swift, has brought many more bettors to the game – on the novelty side especially – people who wouldn’t normally bet.
“Everybody knows Taylor Swift,” he adds. “Her popularity continues to grow. She’s dating one of the players in the game, and that story has stuck for quite a few months. That has increased the popularity in NFL betting and I am grateful to her for that. Then we take that story and create bets around that.”

For example, one of their props is around Swift’s Déjà vu song, with the Chiefs winning the game by 11 – the same difference in score the last time the Chiefs and 49ers played in the Super Bowl, four years ago, with the final score 31-20 (Odds for “Yes” is 31.00). Or Friendship Bracelets: Kelce or 49ers’ fullback Kyle Juszczyk to Score the First TD (7.00).
Props like that have been very popular so far, Avello says.
MOST BET PLAYER PROPS FOR SUPER BOWL
At DraftKings this morning, on the NFL betting player prop front, most of the betting is focusing on the quarterbacks: Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Over 1.5 Passing TD (1.63), and the 49ers’ Brock Purdy Over 12.5 Rushing Yards (1.83). Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce Over 70.5 Receiving Yards (1.77) and Kelce Over 6.5 Receptions (1.63), and Mahomes Alternate Passing Yards 225+ (1.33) are getting a lot of the attention.
Betting trends to focus on, according to Avello and DraftKings:
- Chiefs have won six straight as underdogs
- 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has a career record of 6-0 as a favourite in the playoffs
- Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid’s teams are 31-7 coming off 13+ days rest
- 49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey has scored 1+ TD in each of his last six post-season games
- Kelce has record 50+ receiving yards in 12 straight playoff games
- Chiefs’ running back Isiah Pacheco has scored 1+ TD in each of his last seven games
- 11 of the 49ers’ last 14 post-season games
- Mahomes has rushed for 29+ yards in each of his Super Bowl appearances
At BetMGM, Purdy Over 12.5 Rushing Yards (1.83), Pacheco Over 67.5 Rushing Yards (1.77), Kelce To Score a TD (1.87), Deebo Samuel To Score a TD (2.40), Mahomes To Score a TD (5.00), Kelce To Score First TD (7.00), McCaffrey To Score First TD (4.50), Pacheco To Score First TD (6.50), and Kelce to Win Super Bowl MVP (14.00) are generating the most betting action (tickets) on the player prop end.
‘HEADS’ MOST POPULAR IN NOVELTY BETTING
Most bet (tickets) game prop is Chiefs to Win By 7-12 Points (6.50), and Chiefs Rushing Touchdown Is First Scoring Play in Game (7.50). Most bet (tickets) novelty prop is “Heads” to be the outcome of the coin toss (1.95).
Someone put down $6,500 to win $975,000 on the correct score to be Chiefs 34-49ers 28 (151.00).
At theScore Bet, as of Wednesday evening, 66.6 per cent of bets on the spread were on the Chiefs, and 71 per cent of bets on the total were on the Over. Kelce To Score a TD (1.95), McCaffrey to Score a TD (1.43), Purdy Over 0.5 Interceptions (1.80), Samuel to Score a TD (2.60), Mahomes Over 1.5 Passing TDs (1.67) are most bet player props.

Adds Tristan Davis, Senior Trader, BetMGM: “There has been lopsided action on the Chiefs to win and cover the spread in the Super Bowl. BetMGM will be cheering for the 49ers. San Francisco winning by one point would be the worst outcome for the sportsbook allowing Niners futures and Chiefs spread bets to all cash.”
Avello says his team is having a blast setting up some of these novelty markets.
“What could be better than working around every sport on the planet making odds on that?” he says. “Coming up with those creative ideas is pure entertainment for us.”
