17:30 Wolverhampton – Gonzaga – 1pt @ 15/2

Gonzaga has an almost perfect profile for me to put my money on as he has a 0-39 record and tends to find a lot going wrong in his races! However, he has finished second on seven occasions and I don’t think it’s a case of him not wanting to try, more so that he’s limited and needs to find the right race.

This could be it, with plenty of mediocre records on show and a favourite who’s wearing blinkers for the first time after more than fifty starts. The second favourite has never won beyond an extended 5f, the third favourite is 0-31 since his last win five years ago and the rest wouldn’t appeal too much. I like the fact that there’s plenty of potential pace on as well to give Gonzaga a chance to finish.

He has finished well on the majority of his recent starts but has been slow to stride more often than not and asked to make ground on the wide outside of the field, which didn’t help his case. It makes me think that he might be in better form than his performances – as reasonable as they have been – would suggest and hopefully things could pan out better for him this time around, especially at the gate.

Removing the cheekpieces worn for quite some time is a move that could go well or badly, but he’s so sleepy in the stalls that it’s worth a shot to get rid of them. He might repeat the trick regardless but there has been enough positive hints lately and dropping into a classified contest may help. Laura Pearson is a better rider than he often has on board as well. We live in hope of better!

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

19:00 Wolverhampton – Shades Of Summer – 1pt @ 13/8

Shades Of Summer takes a lot less explaining! She’s a lightly-raced 4-year-old with a solid record, six outings yielding two wins, three seconds and a third. The latter came four weeks ago when beaten at even money around Chelmsford and on the face of it, it was a disappointing effort against more exposed rivals. However, it was her first start for over three months and she looked to be a step short.

With fitness more in line with where her trainer would like it to be, she could resume her progressive ways. Her penultimate start yielded a fine win on her handicap debut, scoring by two-lengths despite having a difficult draw, and a 6lb higher mark does not look to be a problem based on that performance. She tackles some decent rivals here but she’s the one with the most scope at the ratings.

20:30 Wolverhampton – Josies Kid – 1pt @ 7/2

Josies Kid was talented as a juvenile and got the better of Korker (102 rated now) in a York nursery at one point. Bar the odd glimmer of hope, the only way has been down as he found himself on a mark he couldn’t deal with and likely went sour. However, he’s still only a 4-year-old so there is hope of a mini revival in these lower grades and this looks like it’s the right sort of race for him to go well in.

He was poor last time out but wasn’t given a hard time over 6f, a trip he doesn’t stay. I’d guess it was a run to make his mark even more appealing and that has worked, as he’s down 3lbs and eligible for a 0-60 for the first time. He has a class edge over the majority of these if he can find some sort of form again and two of his outings in December suggest it’s not impossible that he could bounce back at this level.
