Mercurius Power hasn’t shone in recent months but the in-form and improving Connor Planas being booked catches the eye on an already well-treated horse. There’s good reason why he has ended up on such an attractive mark but I’m happy enough to overlook his latest two starts, firstly at Beverley when going without his regular tongue-tie and then at Doncaster when wearing a first-time visor.
Connections have simplified matters now as he’s in the tongue-tie again, the visor is gone and he drops into the 0-70 band for only the second time ever. He won the other attempt and it’s interesting to note that after a relatively flat start to last season, he came good with a Sandown success in July. Four runs in this month have yielded two wins and a second, so it may be his time of year to really peak.
The yard had a winner and a second last week, and Planas was on board the winner (first ride for Jessica Macey). To see him booked up again so soon could be a hint that this one is fancied as well and the early markets would back up that theory. Regardless of jockey booking, any double-figured price interests me and in an open handicap, if he bounces back to form he should be a player late on.

17:20 Thirsk – Music Society – 1pt @ 10/1
On his peak form, Mr Wagu would win this. But he’s not really operating at his best yet and I’d prefer to look elsewhere given the prices on offer. Music Society is 0-7 at this track but has posted solid timefigures on multiple occasions and four of those runs have led to second placed finishes. I think it’s the sort of place that can bring out the best in him and he might have a big say in this.
His recent performance around Pontefract was a good effort as well, as he finished nicely to grab third. As is often typical over that C&D, the pace won out despite it being on the generous side and even the runner-up was positioned near it throughout. I’m inclined to upgrade what Tim Easterby’s charge achieved on the day and if he takes a small step forward on the figure achieved, he’ll go well again.
