15:10 Haydock – Leodis Dream – 2pts @ 15/2

Leodis Dream looks to be at least a few points on the large side to win this. Granted, his record in recent seasons is not great but he started off life as a winning machine and scored on five of his first six starts. That led to an overly inflated handicap mark and once other horses caught up physically, he struggled. It took almost three years for him to win again when landing a Ripon handicap in September.

It’s a big positive to see that some leniency from the handicapper has him back on the same mark today and I thought he shaped with plenty of promise at Chester last time, beaten little more than a length into fifth place. A wide track position in the early part of the race didn’t help his case and that was a 0-95 to boot (winner scored again since), so it’s easy to be positive about the effort he posted.

Today’s contest represents a drop into a 0-75, one where his pace could be put to much better use, and there should be no issue with the ground. The less pace pressure he faces, if the tactics are to go from the front, the better his chance of winning will be and most of the opposition tend to accept a lead when it’s offered up. Hopefully, he can get loose on what is often a speed-favouring C&D.

16:10 Haydock – Satin Snake – 1pt @ 12/1

Satin Snake isn’t proven as a sprinter and has only had one go at this 6f trip since being trained by Adrian Keatley (tried it in a couple of nurseries when trained over in Ireland). He had a wider draw on that occasion, lost a shoe in the middle of it and it was an apprentice race, so there’s enough in place to suggest that it could be worthwhile to judge him less harshly than the formbook would.

He’s probably a few pounds better on the All-Weather also but I thought he shaped with some promise at Beverley last time (over the extended 7f), not given an overly hard time of it after a proper run through wasn’t forthcoming. That followed another good effort over the same C&D and both came without any form of headgear, which hadn’t happened since he came to race in Britain.

Blinkers going back on will give him a better chance of travelling in a sprint (all four of his wins have come in blinkers) and although he’s not having many winners lately, I like the booking of Jason Hart. He rides this track well, he’s 2-9 with a further couple of seconds for the yard and his style should suit the horse well. All will depend on the rhythm he can get into but the price makes the risk worthwhile.
