Memorial Betting Predictions:

The US Open is just a week away but before then the PGA Tour travels to Dublin, Ohio, for the Memorial Tournament, the penultimate Signature Event of the year with a limited 73-man field.

Betting sites have priced world number one Scottie Scheffler as the 18/5 favourite, with USPGA champion Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy both 9/1, although none of the above have ever won this tournament.

Viktor Hovland beat Denny McCarthy in a play-off to win here 12 months ago and is 18/1 for a successful title defence, while two-time winner Patrick Cantlay is priced at 25/1.

Our golf experts on The Panel have checked out current and course form, and looked at the betting apps for the best odds for this week’s three Memorial betting tips.

Hot Straka A Must For Muirfield

Muirfield is one of the most difficult courses on the PGA Tour, a 7,569-yard par 72 which underwent a major renovation under the watchful eye of designer Jack Nicklaus in 2020.

Following his success 12 months ago, Hovland described ‘Jack’s Place’ as “harder than most major championship golf courses we play”, so this will be a tough test ahead of next week’s trip to Pinehurst.

The fairways may be generous, but the rough is penal, the undulating greens are firm and fast, and the bunkers are plentiful, so a premium is placed on the second shot.

Scheffler continues to lead the Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green stats this season and is a worthy favourite despite his encounters with the law lately, but the first of The Panel’s Memorial betting tips is for Sepp Straka to win at 60/1 with 888Sport.

Big names have dominated this tournament in recent years, but Straka is gradually becoming one of those players on the back of excellent form which has put him just outside the top 20 in the world rankings.

The 31-year-old Austrian posted top 10s in three of his last four tournaments at Harbour Town, Quail Hollow and Colonial, having previously finished 16th at both The Players Championship and The Masters.

Although he is just outside the top 50 in the SG: Tee-to-Green stats, the two-time PGA Tour winner was sixth in that metric in his last outing at the Charles Schwab Challenge, just behind Scheffler, so The Panel have reason for encouragement.

Despite being the second most accurate player off the tee behind Collin Morikawa, Straka’s five appearances at Muirfield hardly leap off the page, but he has a couple of top-20s here and his form suggests he will go well against a stellar field.

Take It To The Max

Max Homa’s first three visits to Muirfield involved a couple of missed cuts, but since then he has finished sixth and fifth, so he has his merits at 40/1 with golf betting sites to win a seventh PGA Tour title.

Homa missed the cut at Colonial a couple of weeks ago, but he has three top-10s in his last eight outings, including third at Augusta, so he knows how to play on tough courses.

The likeable American’s tee-to-green stats are slightly better than Straka’s, although it remains a slight concern he has been on the streaky side lately.

However, finishing in the top six since the course underwent major changes is a good sign and The Panel are on board Homa to finish inside the top 10 for a third successive year.

Bank On Billy To Be Top 20 Hit

Billy Horschel heads to Ohio brimming with confidence, having won his eighth PGA Tour title at the Corales Puntacana Championship in April which came almost two years after his last success - the Memorial Tournament.

In 2022, Horschel finished four strokes ahead of Aaron Wise and despite missing the cut last year, the West Ham fan has four top 20s in his last six appearances at Muirfield.

Horschel was an impressive eighth at the USPGA Championship and played well at Colonial the week after.

Had he picked up an extra shot, Horschel would have made it five top 20s in his last seven outings and he looks a decent shout in the each-way market at 66/1 with many bookmakers.

Admittedly, he is up against a quality field this week, but that was the case at Valhalla, so Horschel to make the top 20 at 13/8 is the pick of The Panel’s Memorial betting predictions.
