Sheffield United appear to be parting company with Paul Heckingbottom, with the Blades looking doomed for Premier League relegation after a 5-0 drubbing at Turf Moor.
The Yorkshire club will look to find a replacement who can steer the team in an upwards direction, with the best betting sites creating a next manager betting market.
Wilder Favourite To Come Back To Sheffield United
It’s little surprise to find that Chris Wilder is trading as the short-priced favourite at 1/5 with football betting sites.
It’s long been rumoured that a return to Bramall Lane could be on the cards for a manager who has previously steered United from League One to the top flight, with the 56-year-old having since had spells with Middlesbrough and Watford.
Wilder is currently odds-on to replace Heckingbottom, with the supporters likely to be in favour of a homecoming for someone who is one of the club’s most successful managers of all time.
He was a hugely popular figure during his time at Sheffield United between 2016-2021, having previously been in charge of Oxford United and Northampton Town.
Warnock Not Likely To Be Back In Blades Dugout
Neil Warnock is another former Sheffield United manager who is among the market leaders on new betting sites, with the 75-year-old having been in charge at Huddersfield Town until recently.
Warnock’s longest ever managerial spell was with the Blades, having enjoyed a successful time of things between 1999-2007.
It’s possible that Warnock would represent a Plan B for the club should terms not be agreed with Wilder, and he is available at 8/1 to be named as Heckingbottom's successor.
The team have just five points on the board from their first 14 matches and they are potentially in need of a short-term rescue act in order to give them a fighting chance of survival this season.
Eustace, Lampard And Allardyce Could Be Available
Indeed, it’s not an attractive position considering the mess that will be inherited by the incoming candidate, with John Eustace, Frank Lampard and Sam Allardyce having also been listed as potential replacements by betting apps for Heckingbottom.
Eustace was doing a superb job as Birmingham City boss at the start of this season before being sacked due to "misalignment with leadership", leaving many bewildered.
The 44-year-old left the Midlands club sitting sixth in the Championship and has emerged as a potential suitor (10/1) for this vacancy over recent days.
Although still in his managerial infancy, the ex-Watford midfielder could be worth a punt for a side who look ill-fated at present.
Frank Lampard is another man who has experience of coaching in the second tier and he is 13/1 to take over at Bramall Lane.
After a successful year with Derby County, the former England midfielder was given the reins at Chelsea and did initially prosper before being replaced.
More recently, he took charge of Everton and kept them afloat in the top flight before being replaced by Sean Dyche last season.
It is hard to see Lampard wanting a position such as this one, while Sheffield United themselves would covet someone with a stronger track record.
Former England manager Sam Allardyce is also available at 13/1, and with a knack for keeping teams afloat in the top flight, he could be an option worth noting.
However, after his recent failure to keep Leeds in the Premier League last season, his rich history of avoiding relegation could be tainted in the eyes of the Blades board.
Potter And Hassenhutl Not Fancied In The Odds
Graham Potter and Ralph Hassenhutl (both 20/1) come next on the list, although everything points towards Chris Wilder getting the nod at Bramall Lane.
It might be that the club have already accepted the likely fate of relegation and now want someone to rebuild the squad ahead of next season’s inevitable campaign in the Championship where they would be among the favourites to come straight back up.
With either of Potter or Hassenhutl in charge, the pedigree that they would bring to Sheffield United in both the Premier League and Championship would make them fantastic appointments.
