Entain's BetCity Gets New Five-Year Dutch Licence From The KSA
BetCity, the Entain-owned brand operated by Betent B.V., has had its Dutch online gambling licence renewed for a further five years, the company confirmed this week.
The renewal means all eight operators still active from the market's original October 2021 licensing round have now secured extensions.
"We are pleased to share that BetCity's online gambling licence has been renewed by the Dutch Gambling Authority for a further five years," the company said in a statement.
"This renewal is an important milestone for BetCity and reflects our continued commitment to offering a safe, responsible and regulated environment for players in the Netherlands."
BetCity's original permit, granted by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) on September 29, 2021, ran from October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2026.
Holland Casino Online, Fair Play Online, Kansino, bet365, Bingoal, GGPoker and Toto have each already had their own licences extended, most running through to October 31, 2031, closing out the Dutch market's first five-year renewal cycle since regulated online gambling launched.
Ten operators originally entered the market in 2021. Two of them, Tombola and LiveScore Bet, withdrew their licences by their own request in December 2024, leaving the eight names now confirmed for a second term.
"Since the regulated market opened, we have worked constructively with the Gaming Authority, policymakers and industry partners to help raise standards and strengthen player protection across the sector," BetCity added.
"As part of Entain, BetCity remains focused on building a sustainable online gambling market where players can choose licensed operators that put safety, responsibility and enjoyment first."
Lottery Monopoly Also Extended
Separately, the KSA has renewed the three monopoly licences held by state lottery operator Lotto BV for another five years, even as a legal challenge to the monopoly system remains before the Council of State's Administrative Jurisdiction Division.
The regulator said it would have preferred to wait for that ruling before deciding on the extension, but judged it "necessary to make a decision now" given the licences' looming expiry.
"It is important in this regard that an uninterrupted legal supply of lottery games, instant lotteries and land-based sports betting is guaranteed even after December 31, 2026," the KSA said.
If the Council of State later finds that awarding the contracts by private negotiation is not permitted, the regulator said any revocation "will not take place earlier than one year after" that ruling, to allow time for a transparent tender process.

Why It Matters For Dutch players
For Dutch players, the completed renewal round offers reassurance that the country's licensed market is stable heading into its second five-year term, at a time when regulators across Europe are tightening supervision of operator conduct rather than shrinking the regulated channel.
BetCity has previously faced KSA enforcement action over duty of care and anti-money laundering failings, and its successful renewal indicates that the regulator judged those issues to have been sufficiently addressed to continue operating under licence.
The Netherlands opened its regulated online gambling market on October 1, 2021, and the KSA has said it intends to publish licensing updates roughly a month before each subsequent expiry date, giving operators and players early visibility into which brands will continue trading legally beyond the current term.
