Macau Gaming Receipts Set To Rise 8.8% As Costs Grow More Slowly

Macau's casino industry is on track for another month of revenue growth, with brokerages pointing to gross gaming revenue (GGR) climbing while cost growth eases, following the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau's (DICJ) confirmation that GGR in August reached MOP21.9 billion (US$2.71 billion).

Citigroup expects Macau's September GGR to rise 12% year-on-year to about MOP20.5 billion (US$2.55 billion), even with a seasonally softer start to the month ahead of China's National Day Golden Week holiday, when visitor numbers typically spike.

Analysts at Seaport had flagged that August's MOP21.9 billion print came in below the roughly 1-2% growth consensus among Bloomberg-surveyed analysts, a shortfall some brokerages attribute to timing effects around VIP and mass-market win rates rather than a genuine slowdown in visitation.

Costs Growing More Slowly Than Revenue

The DICJ publishes Macau's official monthly GGR figures on its own statistics portal, providing operators, investors and regulators with a consistent baseline for tracking the market's recovery.

With Macau's six concessionaires continuing to invest in non-gaming attractions and premium-mass offerings to draw visitors ahead of Golden Week, analysts say the combination of rising receipts and comparatively contained cost growth points to improving operating leverage across the market heading into the final quarter of the year.

Visitor Numbers Also Climbing

Macau's recovery has been underpinned by rising visitor arrivals, which topped 30 million for the year 22 days earlier than in 2025, alongside a run of concerts and entertainment events that have driven record demand for ride-hailing services from visitors, particularly those arriving from Hong Kong.

Casino operators have leaned on that non-gaming draw, from retail to live entertainment, to widen their customer base ahead of the Golden Week travel period.
