Maine Casinos Make $12.6M In January As Table Game Revenue Slides

The month of January saw a total of $12.6million in gaming revenue from the two commercial casinos located in the State of Maine. 

This figure represents a 3.4% decrease from the $13m generated by these two casinos in the same month last year. 

The Maine Gambling Control Unit reported that January's total revenue reflected mixed trends, with a small increase in slots revenue and a large decrease in table games revenue.

While Maine’s brick-and-mortar market remains steady, the broader US gambling landscape continues to evolve as more players explore digital options and compare platforms, including the best online casinos.

Across Maine, the $11m in slot revenue (up 1.3%) confirms the clear dominance of electronic gaming in the state's casino market. 

On the other hand, table games declined 26.5% to about $1.6m in revenue. Progress in slot and table gaming has created a much different revenue environment for all smaller regional casinos nationally – and Maine is no exception.

Oxford Casino Remains Market Leader Despite Downturn

January was a month in which Oxford Casino generated the highest revenue among all gaming casinos in Maine. 

Revenues from the slots at Oxford Casino decreased by $6.6m from January through December. Although they generated $964,815 in table game revenue during the same period, the decline in both forms of gaming continued to put pressure on the total operations of Oxford Casino. 

Overall revenues for January were down by over 4.9% compared to the previous year. Despite these declining revenues from each of the two gaming types, Oxford Casino continues to be the leader in overall revenues earned in Maine’s gaming marketplace.

Fluctuations in table game revenues can have an outsized impact on overall statewide performance in small markets like Maine, as fewer casinos mean that individual casino performance strongly influences the statewide performance.

Hollywood Casino Shows Slot Growth Amid Table Game Weakness

Hollywood Casino was down slightly, with total revenues falling by just under $5m, a 0.9% decline year-over-year. 

While the property's slots business grew 7.6% to total revenue of approximately $4.4m, table game revenue declined 35.1% to $657,008.

The disparity in the performance of Hollywood's slots versus table games reflects a broader trend across the state and suggests a potential shift away from table games toward electronic gaming. 

Slots continue to provide stable revenue streams, while table game revenues appear more susceptible to visitation fluctuations and seasonal demand.

What January Numbers Suggest

Although overall revenues are down, the decline is slight; therefore, the market remains stable despite fewer table games. The majority of revenue from Maine sales continues to come from slot machines. 

But, there is still significant growth in Maine slot machine revenue.

January is generally seen by analysts as a month of transition from the holidays and thus show mixed results with respect to December or peak months of business.

However, the plateau of growth in slot machines from last month would indicate continued consistent patronage of these slot machines, regardless of fluctuations in patrons playing table games.

Looking Ahead For Maine’s Casino Market

The limited number of commercial casinos in Maine makes performance changes more impactful on overall numbers. 

Operators are expected to focus on strengthening their slots as they seek to increase table game play in the near future.

January numbers showed a slight decline compared with the same period last year, but continued strong performance in slots indicates the Maine casino market remains steady. 

The monthly reports over the next couple of months will indicate whether the decline in table game revenues is temporary or part of a broader trend in gaming behavior.
