MGM Resorts, BetMGM Commit $1Million To Responsible Gaming Programs

As part of its sponsorship with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) for Problem Gambling Awareness Month this March, MGM Resorts International will donate $1million to expand its responsible gaming outreach through new initiatives and programs.

The total amount of funding available will be $450,000.

The remainder of the donation will be provided to the International Center for Responsible Gaming in order to support an independent, multi-year research project on sports betting behavior and the associated risks.

This research will investigate the influences, how risk is distributed across distinct player types, and whether existing preventive methods are effective.

These insights are increasingly important as more players explore digital gambling platforms, including the best online casinos.

The research is designed to provide data-based knowledge to improve responsible gambling standards across the gambling industry.

In addition to funds being provided for research development, the organisations have allocated in excess of $850,000 to support both national and state-based organisations whose mission is to prevent gambling-related harm and treat individuals suffering from gambling problems.

It includes funding for educational training/conferences, the provision of training for professionals working with individuals affected by gambling-related problems, and grants provided to organisations specializing in supporting gambling-related issues or promoting responsible practices related to gambling.

Expansion Of GameSense And Responsible Gaming Campaigns

MGM Resorts and BetMGM are expanding the GameSense program, developed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, which focuses on educating players and engaging staff. More than 2,000 staff members have now been trained as certified GameSense Advisors, allowing them to speak with customers about responsible gambling practices and provide assistance as needed.

Retail casinos, online betting sites, and gaming platforms (like the BetMGM app) will expand their responsible gaming campaigns across all channels.

"Overall, BetMGM’s continued emphasis on research, education and structured support demonstrates the industry's commitment to providing player protections as it expands its offerings to consumers."

Their promotional materials will focus on equipping players with the tools to set limits, take breaks, and make informed decisions about gambling - whether they are betting on sports or playing popular titles often featured among the best online slots available to consumers.

Through the latest initiative, employees will receive training from EPIC Global Solutions, a UK company specializing in lived-experience education for gambling harm.

Also, EPIC recently mentioned that it is investigating the use of limited-function artificial intelligence to help identify potential gambling harm, but continues to emphasize human-based research and training.

Global Implications And Industry Trends

Even though the announcement is focused on the U.S. market, it also has worldwide implications.

In America, BetMGM is a joint venture of MGM Resorts and UK-based Entain, whereas outside the U.S., the international BetMGM operation is run by MGM under the LeoVegas brand.

Entain, based in London, has invested heavily in responsible gambling initiatives, including the launch of the Advanced Responsibility and Care (ARC) program in 2021.

The announcement indicates a larger trend in the gambling industry, as legalized sports betting expands into more and more markets.

Gambling addiction has received greater focus from operators in the last ten years than ever before.

Regulators and prevention groups are still taking a cautious approach to regulation, especially as new forms of gambling, such as prediction markets, become more popular.
