Spinning To Win: Red Pays Off For NFL Teams

The 2025/26 NFL regular season begins on September 4, with the Dallas Cowboys heading to the defending Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles to open what is expected to be an action-packed campaign.
Superstitions and luck play a huge part in NFL football as fans and players follow routines to give their team what they hope will be an extra edge.
Roulette players also follow superstitions, picking their favourite number or color to win big.
In the NFL there are 11 teams with primary colors featured on the roulette wheel.

This statistic got the Gambling.com team thinking, which of the three colors associated with the NFL teams has been the luckiest?
We used the data from the NFL 2024/25 regular season– wins, penalties conceded (less is better) and points scored to find that out.
A Final Lucky Score for each team was calculated by finding their average score across all three data points/metrics (out of 100), before all of the teams were grouped into primary colors to find the Final Lucky Score for each color.

Red Means Luck: NFL's Fortunate Teams In Scarlet
The NFL teams that wear a primary color of red, the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals and the Washington Commanders, are the luckiest after registering a collective Final Lucky Score of 58 out of 100.
The teams in red topped the list in the least amount of penalties and most points scored in the 2024/25 regular season.
The Arizona Cardinals had the lowest amount of penalties with 92, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were second in overall points with 502.

Every team in red scored over 380 points, boosting their overall lucky score.
Although the reds topped the final lucky score, they narrowly missed out on the wins average, with the greens taking the top spot with 53, one point ahead of the reds.
The joint-luckiest NFL teams are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles after registering a 73 Final Lucky Score average.
The Chiefs topped the rankings for the most regular season wins (15), while the Eagles were consistent across wins (14), penalties (103) and points scored (463).

Black and Green, Short On Luck
Separated by just one point, the NFL teams that wear black as their primary color narrowly beat the green teams with a Final Lucky Score of 43.
An outlier among the teams wearing black or green is the Baltimore Ravens, who scored the most points (518) during the 2024/25 regular season, more than any other team associated with the colors on a roulette table.
However, the Ravens ultimately lost to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Playoffs.

The teams whose primary colors include black, the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders, had a Wins Score almost 20 points behind the teams in green–37 to 53–impacting their final lucky score.
This was largely down to the Las Vegas Raiders only winning four regular season games, resulting in them receiving a second-to-last Final Lucky Score of just 27.
On the other hand, the green teams, the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, languished far behind in the penalties metric, with 27, which is 37 behind the red teams’ average score.
These three teams conceded over 100 penalties, with the New York Jets giving up 137, the highest across all the teams involved.
