Punchestown Gold Cup

The feature race of the Festival each year is the Punchestown Gold Cup, which takes place on the Wednesday of the meeting. Open to horses aged five years or older, this race is one of the highlights of the whole National Hunt season.

Unlike the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, this major event is run over a slightly shorter distance of three miles and half-a-furlong, but that doesn’t mean it’s a simpler test of stamina or class, given Punchestown’s unique course and its right-hand configuration.

Punchestown Champion Hurdle

Run on the Friday of the meeting over two miles and nine hurdles, the Punchestown Champion Hurdle usually features many of the horses that ran in the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle the previous month.

Open to horses aged four years or older, this race has had a wonderful roll-call of winners over the years, including Faugheen, Supasundae and Hurricane Fly - with the latter winning it four times in-a-row between 2010 and 2013.

Punchestown Champion Chase

The big race on the first day of the festival is the Punchestown Champion Chase, run at top speed over two miles and 11 fences by a host of star chasers that battled it out in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival earlier in the season.

Formerly a handicap race, it became a conditions race in 1999 and tends to have a smaller field than other contests - but is always of a high calibre.

The great Sprinter Sacre took the honours back in 2013 in a memorable tussle with local hero Sizing Europe, who had won the previous season and also took the renewal in 2014. In 2021, Chacun Pour Soi romped home by over five lengths.

Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle

Run on the Thursday of the Punchestown Festival is the Champion Stayers Hurdle, which gives the best of the best a chance to battle it out over three miles and 14 hurdles to land bragging rights.

The legendary Quevega often wrapped up her campaign each year with a win here and remains the race’s most successful horse after winning it four times in-a-row from 2010 to 2013.

Punchestown Champion Flat Race

Open to amateur riders and horses aged between four and seven, the Champion Flat Race often throws up a star of the future.

Former footballer Alan Shearer, golfer Lee Westwood and TV presenters Ant and Dec are members of the ‘Masters Syndicate’ that own Augusta Kane, who won the Mares’ Bumper at the 2016 Punchestown Festival. The partnership was sealed after they met at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
Two horses named Scottish Memories have won at Punchestown - the first a prolific winner who landed the Drogheda Handicap Chase under Terry Biddlecombe in 1963 and the second winning the Champion Novice Hurdle for Noel Meade in 2002.
The 1900 Punchestown Festival bears little resemblance to today’s meet and was a two-day fixture officially named the Kildare and National Hunt meeting. Its richest prize was £417 for the Maiden Plate, a 4m steeplechase won by four-year-old Drumree.
Around 125,000 pints, 10,000 measures of Irish whiskey, 60,000 cups of coffee, 7,500 Irish fillet steaks, 50,000 handmade sandwiches and three tonnes of potatoes and vegetables will be consumed during the five-day festival.
Punchestown has hosted several music events, with the likes of AC/DC, Bon Jovi and Eminem playing sold-out concerts at the racecourse.
