Britney Spears Biopic Odds: Carpenter & Brown To Battle It Out For Lead Role
A Britney Spears biopic has been talked about in Hollywood for a few years, after her bombshell memoir The Woman in Me was released.
But in recent days the project has moved forwards with New Girl creator Liz Meriwether signing up to write the movie's screenplay, which has sparked further speculation on betting sites about who might play the Toxic hitmaker.
Several stars have put their hands up in the past to take on a potential career-defining role, but who might get the nod to play Britney?
Lucky Sabrina
Sabrina Carpenter is the early 5/4 favourite on betting apps to land the coveted Britney role.
The Espresso singer paid the biggest compliment to the Lucky hitmaker at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, when she paid homage to Britney's Oops!... I Did It Again music video.
Sabrina sampled the iconic Titanic spoken interlude from the music video amid her medley of hits at the spectacle - and Britney enjoyed Sabrina giving her a shout out on the red carpet.
She said afterwards in an Instagram video: "This Sabrina girl, she said my name on the red carpet and I thought that was kind of cool.

"Because I forget I’m famous sometimes ... but that was kind of cool. This Sabrina girl, Carpenter, she said something about me and I was like, ‘Thanks! That’s cool!’ She made me cool." However, Britney found it "weird" that Sabrina kissed an alien onstage, but insisted: "I love her. I adore her to death."
But Sabrina might face stiff competition from Ariana Grande, who is a 6/4 chance to land the role, and is the only one of the main contenders who has worked with Britney biopic filmmaker Jon M. Chu before in the movie Wicked and sequel Wicked: For Good.
Last year, Chu dismissed a Life & Style magazine report about Grande, Carpenter and Millie Bobby Brown being in a battle for the Britney role. He wrote on X: "None of this is true. Sounds exciting but have not had one conversation about casting this movie yet. We are way too early in development. Sorry."
However, 14 months have since passed, and with a new writer joining the movie, there have no doubt been some discussions about the leading lady by now.
A Brit To Play Brit?
Millie is just 11/8 second favourite to land the role, and she leads the Brits in the market. The Stranger Things star has made no secret of the fact she would love to play Britney one day.
Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022, Millie said: "I think her story, first of all, resonates with me. Just growing up in the public eye watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger... I don't know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way - and hers only."
It would be a dream role for Millie and she is the right age, at 22, to depict some of Britney's younger years.
Fellow British star Sophie Turner has also been linked to the part. The Game of Thrones actress, who is 7/2 on betting sites, certainly has the look of Britney about her and the acting ability, and she is known to be a huge fan of the pop star.
Irish actresses Saoirse Ronan (6/1) and Jessie Buckley (10/1) could also be in contention.

Spears' Top Choices
From Brits to Britney, Spears' top picks to portray her are said to be Natalie Portman (13/8) and Selena Gomez (10/3). A large chunk of Britney's book The Woman in Me focuses on her conservatorship battle with her family, and it's thought Portman could be an ideal pick to portray Britney during those times.
In February, a source told In Touch magazine: "To tell that story, Natalie is the right age. And her longtime friendship with Britney means that [she] can trust Natalie to portray her honestly." Last year, Gomez was linked to the coveted part.
Another huge star who could be in the frame is Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney (15/8). She has been talked about for several high-profile roles in recent times after her appearances in the HBO show and The White Lotus catapulted her to further fame.
Pop stars Addison Rae (2/1) and Tate McRae (4/1) - no relation - have both been linked to play Stronger singer Britney. However, the pair have distanced themselves from the role. In 2024, Rae told iHeart Radio's The Hit List she doesn't think "anyone" deserves to play Britney, and a year later McRae shut down the possibility of her playing the iconic part.
She told Rolling Stone: "I don't really act. I need to take an acting lesson before I’d even consider ever doing anything. And also, I feel like I look nothing like her or sound nothing like her, so I don’t know if I’d be a great fit." It's up to Universal to find the right person.
