Grosvenor Casino Sunderland Closes Its Doors To Customers For Good

Grosvenor Casino Sunderland, part of Rank Group's estate in the UK's regulated casino market, has closed its doors to customers for good, with the closure taking effect on August 31, 2026.

The company broke the news to members in a social media post, and Grosvenor Casinos chiefs confirmed the closure directly to the Sunderland Echo on September 1. 

The post read: "Today we're sharing the news that Grosvenor Casino Sunderland will be closing on 31st August. We'd like to thank all of our customers for their support over the years. 

It's been a privilege to welcome you and to be part of so many great moments." It added that members could "continue to enjoy the Grosvenor Casinos experience at Grosvenor Casino Newcastle," roughly 12 miles north of the closed site.

A Grosvenor Casinos spokesperson confirmed the decision followed an internal review of the venue: "After a thorough consultation process, we have made the difficult decision to close Grosvenor Casino Sunderland. 

This is not a decision that we have taken lightly, but we need to remain focused on the longer-term health of the business."

The spokesperson added: "We sincerely thank our colleagues for their professionalism, dedication and contribution to Grosvenor Casinos over the years, especially during this difficult period." 

Rank Group, which runs Grosvenor as one of its core land-based casino brands, did not provide further details when asked about the specific reasons behind the closure, how many jobs were affected, or whether any staff had been offered transfers to other venues.

The closure came as a surprise to at least one regular. Jon Bryan, 58, a poker player and member at the Sunderland casino, said he learned of the decision by email. 

"As a member, I got an email from Grosvenor informing me they were closing their Sunderland casino down," he said. "The poker room has been a lot busier recently, and so I was surprised when I saw the email. 

It's sad news. The casino was a big part of the local community, and I know a lot of people will be disappointed."

The Sunderland closure lands within a day of Grosvenor also shutting its Swansea venue on August 30, pointing to a wider retrenchment in Rank Group's land-based estate as it weighs the cost of running standalone casinos against demand for live casino tables and other regulated formats.

Rank's own investor disclosures describe Grosvenor as the largest land-based casino operator in the UK, running 50 venues and holding a 45% share of the country's 111 operating casinos by site count. 

The group has told investors it expects reforms to the Gambling Act Review, including a relaxed cap on gaming machines per licence and a wider sports betting rollout across its estate, to support the Grosvenor business going forward, even as it trims sites that are no longer commercially viable on their own.

Members with an active balance or loyalty points at the Sunderland site have not yet been told publicly how those will be transferred to the Newcastle casino, and Rank has not said whether the Sunderland building will be repurposed or sold.
