Martin Booth began his journalism career as a junior reporter for a local West London paper in 1987. Over the following years, he climbed to senior reporter, chief reporter, and eventually to the editors’ desk. In 1990, he joined the Daily Express sports desk, marking the start of a 21-year tenure in sports journalism.
His experience spans several notable UK national newspapers, including the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, and News Of The World, where he served as Digital Head of Sport until its closure in 2011. Martin was Deputy Sports Editor at the Sunday Mirror and curated daily horse racing selections for eight years.

Outside of work, Martin’s life is deeply intertwined with sports. A passionate Chelsea fan since 1970, he is a season ticket holder and a devoted follower of horse racing, cricket, and other sports. His Saturdays often include placing small wagers on televised horse races, a tradition dating back to his first winning bet on Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.
“My grandfather, who was a regular punter, used to put a small each-way bet on for us. I’ve been actively following horse racing ever since, and still get to the track as often as work allows.”
Martin also enjoys the occasional flutter at casinos, favoring blackjack, roulette, and the online slot game 1429 Uncharted Seas.
Martin is an active sports fan who attends live events at venues like Lord’s, The Oval, and various racetracks. His mornings begin with a mile-long swim, and he’s completed the London Marathon—twice.
When not immersed in sports, Martin enjoys crossword puzzles—having competed in the Times Crossword Championship—and reading about history and business. He loves to travel with his wife and two daughters.
