The Star Gold Coast Licence Suspension Deferred To March 2027

The Star Gold Coast Licence Suspension Deferred To March 2027

The Queensland government has extended the deferral of The Star Gold Coast's casino licence suspension for a further six months, moving the decision date to March 31, 2027.

The Crisafulli government confirmed the extension after reviewing the latest independent advice from special manager Nicholas Weeks, who has overseen the venue's remediation program since it was first threatened with suspension.

Weeks also had his appointment as special manager extended to the same date, alongside the external adviser role at sister property The Star Brisbane.

Remediation Progress, But Work Remains

The Star Gold Coast was originally due to have its casino licence suspended for 90 days from September 30 2025, but Queensland has deferred that suspension in six-month increments ever since, most recently pushing it back from September 30 2026.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Weeks' report in August found it unnecessary to trigger the suspension immediately, though he noted "a credible basis to rescind the deferred suspension" existed, given outstanding gaps in the remediation plan. Roughly 80 milestones remain to be delivered between now and July 31 2027.

Queensland's attorney general said expectations of the operator have not softened, and that the government retains the power to act immediately if The Star fails to meet its obligations.

The additional six months are intended to allow the operator to continue embedding reforms across governance, financial crime controls, safer gambling, and risk management, the priority areas identified following the original Bell Inquiry findings.

A Pattern Of Deferrals Since 2022

Queensland first flagged a possible suspension of the Gold Coast casino's licence more than four years ago.

Since then, deferrals have been granted repeatedly as The Star worked through its court-ordered remediation plan, with the state shortening each extension since the current government took office.

The Star Entertainment Group confirmed the decision to the ASX, noting the deferral keeps both of its Queensland properties operating through at least the first quarter of 2027.

The company's Sydney casino licence remains suspended separately, with a manager's term currently extending to September 30 2026.

For The Star, continued operation buys more time to convince Queensland regulators of its suitability as a licence holder, a process the company has repeatedly said it remains committed to completing.

Financial Backdrop

The deferral lands as The Star works through its own balance sheet repair alongside the regulatory process.

The company completed the first stage of its joint venture partnership transaction in April 2026, exiting Destination Brisbane Consortium and releasing a parent company guarantee tied to DBC's $1.4 billion debt facilities.

The second stage of that transaction remains subject to separate conditions, which The Star currently expects to satisfy by no later than March 31 2027, the same deadline now set for the Gold Coast licence decision.

The Star's other Queensland asset, The Star Brisbane, avoided a licence suspension outright but remains under an external adviser whose appointment has been extended in step with the Gold Coast deferral.

Sydney's casino licence, suspended separately, remains the most severe regulatory action taken against the group since the Bell Inquiry findings first exposed governance and financial crime failures across the company's casinos.
