Professional Experience

Ian began his professional career with Chester before joining Liverpool in 1980, where he developed into one of Europe's leading strikers.

His standout 1983/84 campaign saw him score 47 goals as Liverpool won the league, League Cup and European Cup. His performances earned him both the PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards, while he also became the first British player to win the European Golden Boot.

After a spell in Serie A with Juventus, Ian returned to English football and continued his successful career with Liverpool before later representing Leeds United, Newcastle United, Sheffield United and Wrexham. His playing experience therefore spans English and European football as well as international competition with Wales.

Since retiring, Ian has remained closely involved in the game through broadcasting, ambassadorial and advisory work, including roles with Liverpool FC and the Football Association of Wales.
