Stake Canada Secures Alberta iGaming Licence, Targets Oct. 12 Launch

Stake Canada Secures Alberta iGaming Licence, Targets Oct. 12 Launch

Stake Canada Ltd. has received conditional registration from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and is targeting an Oct. 12 launch in the province's regulated iGaming market, according to Covers.com.

The operator must still finalize a commercial operating agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) before it can legally accept wagers in the province.

Two-Step Alberta Process

Alberta separates gambling regulation from commercial oversight: the AGLC handles licensing and compliance, while the AiGC manages operating agreements, the province's 80/20 revenue split and broader market administration.

Stake first appeared on the AGLC's registered-operator list in late September before receiving conditional registration on Oct. 6.

Any operator seeking an Alberta license must also exit the province's unregulated grey market by Oct. 13.

“Stake Canada's approach to regulated market-entry is grounded in preparation, accountability and a long-term commitment to compliance,” said Birgitte Sand, a Stake Canada board member.

“Securing licensing in Alberta provides a strong foundation for the company's development in Canada and reflects the importance we place on meeting local standards and player safety.”

Joining A Crowded Field

Alberta became the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to open its market to multiple private operators when it launched on July 13.

The province has approved more than 50 iGaming platforms, with around 30 currently operational alongside North American mainstays such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Bet99.

“Our planned entry into Alberta represents an exciting milestone for us in Canada - we are not here to blend in,” said Kris Abbot, Stake Canada's manager.

“We are here to raise the bar and bring the distinctive Stake experience to Alberta's highly engaged player audience.”

Players weighing their options can review Alberta's online gambling rules before signing up with any operator.

How Alberta's Revenue Split Works

Under the AiGC's commercial framework, operators keep 80% of net iGaming revenue, while the government retains 20%, with a 3% carve-out of gross gaming revenue set aside upfront for First Nations communities and mental health and addiction treatment programs.

Every licensed operator must also follow the AGLC's Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming rulebook, which covers responsible gambling standards, player protection, security and a centralized self-exclusion system that lets players ban themselves from online sportsbooks, retail gaming facilities, or both, rather than having to opt out of each platform individually.

Stake has been expanding quickly across the Americas, having launched in Argentina shortly before the World Cup, built out operations in Brazil, Peru and Colombia, and entered Mexico in May.

The flagship Stake.com platform remains unavailable to players in the United States, where the company instead offers its Stake.us social casino product.

Unlike jurisdictions that require a land-based partnership before online casinos can apply, Alberta allows online-only operators to seek approval once they reach agreements with both the AGLC and the AiGC, which is part of what has made the province attractive to global brands like Stake.
