Barry Faudemer Named Jersey Gambling Chair

Barry Faudemer, the former head of Jersey's joint Police and Customs Financial Crimes Unit, has begun a four-year term as chairman of the Jersey Gambling Commission board. Faudemer is an FBI Academy graduate trained in money laundering and terrorist financing investigation.

He served as director of enforcement at the Jersey Financial Services Commission from 2007 to 2020 and led the island's Joint Police and Customs Financial Crimes Unit for almost seven years, and has previously contributed to the development of key financial crime legislation in Jersey.

The Commission said his experience spans regulation, financial crime prevention and law enforcement.

Why It Matters?

The appointment brings a financial-crime specialist to the top of Jersey's gambling regulatory structure at a time when gambling regulators across UK Crown Dependencies continue to face pressure over anti-money-laundering compliance and licensing oversight for online operators using island-based licences.

The Commission has also flagged strain on health services dealing with problem gambling, calling for better coordination with public health bodies during the same period as the appointment.

The Jersey Gambling Commission licenses and supervises gambling activity connected to the island, including online betting sites that hold Jersey-issued licences, placing anti-money-laundering oversight and cooperation with UK and international financial crime bodies squarely within the regulator's remit.

Public Health Considerations

Faudemer's appointment comes as the Commission has separately raised concerns about the strain problem gambling places on health services, calling for closer coordination between the regulator and public health bodies, an area his enforcement and financial-crime background does not directly cover but that will fall within his remit as chairman.

His appointment runs for four years, giving him a fixed term to implement any changes to the Commission's supervisory approach, including its stated interest in closer cooperation with public health services on problem-gambling support.

Faudemer takes over the Commission's board at a moment when the regulator itself has been vocal about pressure on health services from problem gambling, giving his four-year term an early test of how the Commission balances financial-crime oversight with player-welfare concerns.
