Google Opens YouTube Masthead To Gambling Ads
Google will let certified online gambling advertisers run campaigns on YouTube's Masthead placement from October 21, 2026, according to a notice the company posted on October 7.
The Masthead sits at the very top of YouTube's homepage and Home feed, the platform's most visible ad slot.
Google has sold it to certified sports betting advertisers since 2022, but online gambling as a wider category, including online casino brands, has been excluded from the format entirely.
The October 21 change extends the existing sports betting carve-out to other certified gambling advertiser categories.
What The Notice Covers
Google's policy update does not name specific markets or list every eligible gambling vertical. Advertisers will still need Google's online gambling certification, the same prerequisite already required to buy gambling ads on Search and YouTube's standard inventory.
The notice explicitly leaves one group out: affiliates and comparison sites that promote gambling operators without holding a direct operating licence do not qualify, even if the operator they point to is certified.
Why It Matters For Operators
Masthead campaigns are sold on a reserved, high-reach basis rather than through standard auction-based YouTube ad buying, making them one of the most expensive single placements Google sells.
Opening the format to a broader set of certified gambling advertisers gives licensed operators a new top-of-funnel brand channel at a moment when several regulators, including the UK Gambling Commission, are tightening scrutiny of gambling advertising reach and frequency.
The timing has drawn comment because it follows separate regulatory pressure on other platforms over gambling ad compliance in the same period.
Certified operators can begin booking October 21 inventory once the policy takes effect. Google has not said whether it will publish a market-by-market rollout list or leave eligibility entirely to its existing certification process.

A Longer History Of Restrictions
YouTube's Masthead has gone through several policy swings on gambling content. Google banned all gambling-related Masthead ads outright in June 2021, including sports betting and casino games, offline and online.
It reopened the format to certified sports betting advertisers in September 2022, provided their creative met the platform's gambling and games policy. The October 2026 update is the first time the carve-out has extended meaningfully beyond sports betting since that 2022 reopening, more than four years after the original blanket ban.
Google's existing gambling and games advertising policy already requires operators to hold Google certification, built on proof of a valid state or national gambling licence, before buying any gambling ad format on its platforms.
That certification requirement carries over unchanged to Masthead eligibility under the new policy, meaning uncertified operators and unlicensed offshore brands remain excluded regardless of the expanded category list.
