Marcus Rashford is one of the victims of Manchester United’s long-time malaise, and betting sites believe a move away from Old Trafford is a serious possibility this summer.

Erik ten Hag will be running the rule over the squad at his disposal once United return for pre-season, with Rashford among the players who has been linked with the exit door.

The academy product has failed to kick on in recent years, and his career stagnation means he might be plying his trade for another club sooner rather than later.

Rashford’s thrilling emergence in 2016 marked him out as one for the future. But the 24-year-old was a huge disappointment last season: devoid of confidence, he looked as if he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

A return of just four goals and two assists in the Premier League served as numerical evidence of his struggles.

If Rashford does conclude that a change of scenery would be for the best, where might he end up? Let’s take a look at some of the leading contenders to sign him.

Newcastle Favourites In Race For Rashford

Newcastle are now the 4/1 favourites on football betting sites to sign Rashford, as the Saudi Arabia-owned club attempt to build a squad capable of challenging for the European places.

Eddie Howe has got St James’ Park bouncing again and the extent of the Public Investment Fund’s riches means it is only a matter of time before the Magpies are challenging for silverware.

That process might take a little longer than their most optimistic supporters are hoping, but the chance to join a club on the rise would surely appeal to someone like Rashford.

The fact that Newcastle would have little trouble meeting his wage demands is another reason why the forward may well be interested in swapping the northwest of England for the northeast.

Having said that, Newcastle remain a mid-table team for now. The club’s financial muscle means they will only sell players if it suits them, so Rashford would likely find it hard to force through an exit if he wants to move on in a couple of years’ time.

Their absence from the 2022/23 Champions League is another potential sticking point.

Tottenham Can Offer Champions League Football

In the short-term at least, a move from Manchester United to Tottenham would be a step up for Rashford.

At the time of writing Antonio Conte’s side seem to be the team most likely to break up the Manchester City-Liverpool duopoly next season. And unlike the Red Devils, Spurs will be participating in the Champions League.

ENIC Group’s recent £150m cash injection into the club’s coffers indicates there is money to spend this summer, but the acquisition of Rashford would take a large chunk out of Tottenham’s budget.

Conte may well have other priorities, with a new centre-back thought to be high up his wish list.

That is not to say a swoop for Rashford is out of the question, but a price of 6/1 with Paddy Power seems a little short despite reports suggesting he is among the attackers Spurs are considering.

PSG In The Mix To Grab Rashford

Kylian Mbappe

For a long time, it seemed like Paris Saint-Germain would need to sign a new forward this summer.

Kylian Mbappe's decision to commit his future to the French giants means that is no longer the case, although persistent suggestions that Neymar could be in his way out mean we could yet see another attacker rock up at the Parc des Princes.

Might Rashford fit the bill? He has had some memorable moments against PSG in the Champions League and the club would have no trouble meeting his wage demands.

However, there has been talk that PSG are edging away from their Galactico recruitment model and we could therefore see a rather low-key transfer window in the French capital, especially if Christoph Galtier is appointed as Mauricio Pochettino's replacement.

England International Might Prefer Overseas Stint

Rashford may feel that his career would be best served by a stint abroad.

It has become increasingly common for young English players to move overseas, with Jude Bellingham, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham among Rashford’s international team-mates who are thriving away from the harsh spotlight of the Premier League.

Jadon Sancho, a current colleague of Rashford’s, would surely vouch for Borussia Dortmund. It seems unlikely at present though, with odds of 16/1 with Betfair reflecting the difficulty that BVB would have in meeting United’s asking price.

Barcelona (11/1), Real Madrid and Juventus (both 12/1) are seen by the UK bookmakers as marginally more likely destinations.

Ambitious Aston Villa Could Submit Offer For Rashford

Aston Villa’s recruitment since Steven Gerrard arrived at the club late last year shows they mean business.

Money has already been spent on Philippe Coutinho and Diego Carlos this summer, while Boubacar Kamara has arrived on a free transfer from Marseille.

Their transfer dealings are unlikely to be over yet, with a new forward thought to be among Gerrard’s priorities. Bertrand Traore could be on his way out in the coming weeks, which would open up an attacking spot in the squad.

The problem for Villa, who are listed at 9/1, is that they will find it extremely difficult to qualify for the Champions League any time soon.

Rashford might accept missing the tournament for a year or two (United have not exactly been ever-present in recent campaigns), but that is the level he will ultimately be striving to get back to. Do not expect to see him in claret and blue next season.

Forward Might Not Be Ready To Leave Boyhood Club Yet

There is another possibility, of course: Rashford might decide to stay at United for at least another year and Unibet offer odds of 1/20 of that happening.

The club is unlikely to force him out given his standing with the fans, while a contract that in effect runs until 2024 (the deal expires next year but United have the option to extend it by a further 12 months) means there is no financial reason to seek a buyer yet.

Much will depend on Rashford’s assessment of Ten Hag. The former Ajax boss has an excellent track record of developing players; if the 24-year-old believes his new manager can help bring the best out of him, he is likely to stay put.

Rushing to leave United could be something Rashford regrets in the future, and he would surely only do so if he believes there is no way back at Old Trafford - a scenario that does not apply at the present moment.
