Valve Closes CS2 Region-Swap Loophole Before Singapore Major

Valve has amended the Counter-Strike 2 Major Supplemental Rulebook to stop teams from switching Valve Regional Standings (VRS) regions in the weeks before invite deadlines, closing a loophole that several rosters used to chase easier qualification routes to the PGL Major Singapore 2026.

The change, pushed to Valve's public rulebook repository on GitHub on October 6, 2026, adds a single new line to the document: "A roster is only eligible for a Regional Assignment if they did not appear in any other region's VRS list in the preceding three calendar months."

The commit, titled "Updating rules for Regional Assignment for the upcoming Singapore Major," was authored by Valve's Brian Levine under the GitHub handle brianlev-valve, who has made every prior update to the same document since 2024.

Why Valve Stepped In

The CS Major Supplemental Rulebook assigns a roster's region by the majority nationality of its players, a rule intended to keep VRS rankings tied to where a team actually competes. In the run-up to the Singapore Major, several organisations restructured their rosters to flip that majority and jump to a region with a lower qualification bar.

BC.Game, featuring Ukrainian player Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev, added Australian and Mongolian players to shift its classification from Europe, where it sat 36th, to Asia, where the same points total put it inside the qualification zone.

Danish organisation Sashi Esports made a comparable roster change days later. A similar tactic surfaced in March 2026, when Team Liquid swapped a player to secure an IEM Cologne 2026 invite through the Americas region.

Those moves drew criticism from players and talent who argued the swaps took Major spots from rosters that had competed in a region all season.

What Changes For The Singapore Major?

Under the new rule, a roster is barred from a regional invite if it appeared on any other region's VRS list within the previous three calendar months.

That forces organisations that swapped nationalities ahead of the Asia invite window back into the European standings they had been trying to leave, since neither region now clears the three-month lookback for them.

The rulebook commit does not name individual teams or rosters; it applies the lookback uniformly to all Regional Assignments going forward, with the older "majority of players" rule left unchanged as the baseline test.

What To Watch Next?

Regional invites for the PGL Major Singapore 2026 are due inside weeks, which gives affected organisations little room to rebuild a roster that clears the new window before the cutoff, which can affect markets on betting sites.

Valve has not published a separate statement beyond the rulebook commit itself, and has not said whether the three-month rule will be extended to other invite pathways outside the Major circuit.

The next scheduled monthly VRS update, which starts the clock on any future region change, will be the first real test of how the rule plays out in practice.
