Ryan Fox PGA Championship Odds: Can the New Zealander win at Oak Hill?

The 2023 PGA Championship takes place between May 18-21, with Oak Hill Country Club playing host and this tournament has been dominated by American players in recent years.

The last seven winners have all represented the US, although there was an Australasian champion as recently as 2015 when Jason Day landed the spoils.

However, we’ve never seen a New Zealand winner when it comes to this golf major and there will be certain players in the line-up hoping to buck this trend.

That includes Ryan Fox who is a 250/1 shot with new betting sites, he has previously performed well in the PGA Championship and will hope to draw on some of his past experiences to make the cut and finish high up the leaderboard.

Fox’s best finish in this tournament was tying 27th in the 2018 renewal, although the Kiwi failed to make the cut a year later and missed out on playing in the 2019 and 2020 tournaments.

Last year, he was able to qualify and make the cut before ending up in 54th position and his odds suggest a similar finish this time around.

It's been a couple of years since Fox last won a tournament, with victories occurring in quick succession on the Charles Tour in April 2021, while he was also successful in the Briscoes Wairakei Pro-Am Invitational that month -although there are signs that he can perform well in New York.

More recently, the Aucklander was able to perform well in the 2023 Masters and he’ll draw plenty of confidence from that tied 26th finish.

The 36-year-old posted rounds of 70 and 71 to make the cut and be bang in contention before dropping back after rounds of 74 and 73 although it was still a credible finish.

Senior PGA Champion Steven Alker a Big Outsider

If Fox doesn’t land an unlikely victory for New Zealand and become the first ever winner to represent this country, then perhaps Steven Alker is the man to do it.

The current Senior PGA champion takes his place in the line-up and it would be a remarkable story if this Kiwi was able to spring a major surprise, as his 1000/1 odds with golf betting sites suggest.

The 51-year-old will be making his PGA Championship debut at Oak Hill Country Club and his appearances in major tournaments have been few and far between.

Having missed the cut in the Open Championship in 1998, the same thing happened in 2007. But Alker was able to turn out in 2012 and tie 19th.

However, Alker’s victory in the Senior PGA Championship in 2022 means that he takes his place in the second major on the golf calendar and that is because of his three-stroke victory at Harbor Shores.

The PGA Championship outright odds suggest that it would be an amazing achievement to simply make the cut in the forthcoming event.
