Wolves Vs Sunderland, Saturday 3pm

What an unusual season this has turned into for Sunderland.

They have gone from relegation favourites with betting apps at the start of the campaign to one of the Premier League’s biggest surprises, including completing a double over Newcastle.

Now, however, their previously incandescent campaign appears to be tailing off.

Two successive defeats, despite European qualification being within reach, have come as a nasty shock.

Last Friday’s 5-0 home thumping by Nottingham Forest was particularly alarming. One has to assume Regis Le Bris and his players will react strongly to that setback.

Even if there are signs of improvement for already-relegated Wolves under Rob Edwards, this match is really about Sunderland’s desire to finish a strong season in the most positive way possible.

Andy Brassell's Weekend Tips:

Alaves v Athletic, Saturday 5.30pm

The relegation battle in La Liga is not for the faint-hearted, and two elements in particular have intensified it in recent weeks: Sevilla being in freefall and one of their former coaches, Quique Sanchez Flores, having a seismic impact in the north at Alaves.

Since a heartbreaking late defeat at Valencia (another of his former clubs) on his debut, Flores has steered his team out of the drop zone, with just one defeat in six - an unlucky one at Real Madrid, a game in which they managed 20 shots at the Bernabeu.

This is precisely how they have done it: by being gutsy and brave.

There have been 23 goals in total in their last five matches, with former West Ham and Oxford striker Toni Martinez hitting a real hot streak, while Athletic have lost six of their last eight.

Leverkusen v Leipzig, Saturday 5.30pm

Leverkusen are not quite in the last-chance saloon, but they might be in the bar next door as they seek to secure their bare minimum of reaching the Champions League.

Currently sixth, they are two points behind the teams directly above them, faltering Stuttgart and a resurgent Hoffenheim, and with three matches to go they still have time to make it happen.

It has to be now or never, though, and Leipzig are probably the last team they wanted to see come over the hill right now, in Bayern-esque form with five successive wins.

Even if the home side can look back on three victories in four, the performances have not been convincing, and only the individual excellence of Patrik Schick earned them a win in last week’s derby at Koln, during which they were thoroughly outplayed.
