GamCare Brings Free Gambling Support To Scottish Highlands And Islands
People struggling with gambling across the Scottish Highlands and Islands can now access free treatment through the charity GamCare.
The support organisation confirmed the new services on August 13, 2026, and they are funded by the Scottish Government's share of the UK-wide statutory gambling levy for up to three years, until March 2029.
What The Funding Covers
The funding goes towards GamCare's outreach and treatment services in the regions, as well as the National Gambling Helpline across Scotland.
Treatment sessions are available to anyone experiencing gambling harms, and to those negatively affected by someone else's gambling, such as friends, family members or colleagues.
Roughly one in seven contacts to the National Gambling Helpline in 2025/2026 came from people affected by another person's gambling.
The Scale Of The Problem
Recent YouGov research of more than 3,700 UK adults, commissioned by GamCare, found that 8% of those surveyed in Scotland who had gambled in the past year felt at some point they may have a problem with it.
Alongside treatment, the charity will offer free prevention and educational services, partnering with local organisations to raise awareness of the signs of harm and the support available.
GamCare's data draws on the reach of online gambling as well as land-based play.
Reaching Rural And Island Communities
Lorraine Hannah, outreach and engagement practitioner at GamCare, said: “It is very encouraging to bring GamCare's support into these communities, many of which may not have known there are dedicated gambling harms services available if they are struggling.
It is clear there is a real need for free, confidential support, particularly in rural and island areas where isolation, boredom and access to online gambling can increase the risk of harm.”
She added: “We have already heard anecdotal insights of how people working in fishing and on oil rigs may be experiencing a high degree of gambling harm, and we want anyone affected to know that support is available. We look forward to working closely with local organisations across the Highlands and Islands to make sure people know they can access non-judgemental support wherever they are.”
