Ladbrokes To Relocate Within Cumbernauld Shopping Centre

North Lanarkshire Council formally granted planning permission for Ladbrokes to relocate to new premises in Cumbernauld.
The move - subject to conditions - was approved on October 5, after North Lanarkshire Council granted planning permission for the move, with the bookmaker shifting from its current spot in The Centre Cumbernauld to the nearby Antonine Shopping Centre.
The new unit sits on the opposite side of Central Way from Ladbrokes' existing shop. Under the approved plans, the betting site will move into part of the former Leading Labels unit inside Antonine Shopping Centre, with the vacant premises divided into two and Ladbrokes occupying one half.
Independent Opening Hours
The plans also include an external access door, giving the betting shop opening hours independent of the wider shopping centre.
North Lanarkshire Council's planning report sets out the reasoning behind the move: "The current Ladbrokes unit is located within the old shopping centre on the opposite side of Central Way. This unit is closing and moving to its new location within the Antonine Shopping Centre."
The relocation comes as part of a much larger shake-up of Cumbernauld town centre. The council is planning the complete replacement of The Centre Cumbernauld, the ageing shopping complex Ladbrokes currently occupies, with demolition split into two stages.
Phase One
The first phase is currently estimated to begin in 2027-28, while a second phase covering the older sections around Tweed Walk and Tay Walk is pencilled in for between 2031 and 2033.
Moving to Antonine Shopping Centre gives Ladbrokes a presence away from the section of the town centre earmarked for demolition first, allowing the bookmaker to keep trading in Cumbernauld without interruption while the wider regeneration project gets under way around it.
The application was handled as a change of use from retail to betting shop, a "sui generis" use class under Scottish planning rules that requires council sign-off before a unit can start trading as a bookmaker.
The grant means Ladbrokes can now proceed with fitting out the new unit without a fresh planning challenge.
