Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is facing increased pressure following his side's 3-2 defeat at Chelsea.

The loss was their 12th of the season so far and leaves the Magpies 10th in the Premier League.

After finishing fourth last season, the club began the current campaign with aspirations of challenging Manchester City for the title.

But an early exit from the Champions League in the group stage and a string of poor league results has seen betting sites update their next Newcastle manager market.

With a top-four finish looking more unlikely, we take a look at the leading candidates to replace Howe if the club decide to change their manager.

With an international break coming up, managers know this is an ideal time for clubs to make a change.

It gives a new manager a fortnight to work with the players before their next league game.

Howe's future might depend on how far they go in the FA Cup, but a trip to Manchester City this weekend is as tough as they come.

A heavy defeat at the Etihad could signal the end of Howe's time in charge at St James' Park.

Injuries have hit Howe's side hard this season, with the likes of Nick Pope, Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock all sidelined. Meanwhile, their big summer signing, Italian international Sandro Tonali, is suspended for 10 months following gambling breaches.

Despite this, some have questioned Howe in recent weeks, and should he be axed from his position there will be no shortage of managers attracted to the job.

Backed by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, known as the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Newcastle spent around £130m over the summer, and there is likely to be further funds available next summer - but which manager could take over the Toon?

Could Jose Take Newcastle To Next Level?

Jose Mourinho last managed in the Premier League almost three years ago, when he left Tottenham in April 2021. Is the time right for a return?

After guiding Roma to Europa Conference League glory, the club's first trophy in 14 years, Mourinho's time in charge of the Giallorossi team came to an end in January.

Mourinho won't be out of a job for long and it might make sense for Newcastle to offer him the job hoping he can end the club's trophy drought.

Aside from the Championship title in 2017 and an Intertoto Cup in 2006, Newcastle haven't landed a major trophy since 1955.

Football betting sites have Mourinho as 6/4 favourites to replace Howe at St James' Park.

Mourinho's football can be tough to watch at times, but if it meant a trophy parade around the streets of Newcastle, then fans might welcome him.

Potter Heads A Classy Chasing Pack

It seems that Graham Potter is biding his time, waiting for the right job to become available. Could that job be at Newcastle?

It's been almost a year since Potter was sacked by Chelsea after a run of disappointing results.

The year out might just be long enough for Potter to recharge his batteries ahead of his next role.

Before his time in charge of Chelsea, Potter was regarded as one of the brightest managers in the game, after successful stints at Swansea and Brighton.

Potter knows he will be judged on his next role, so he has to be certain he can achieve what he wants.

Potter is 2/1 second favourite to take over from Howe on Tyneside, and should he be able to recapture his Brighton form he could be a wise appointment.

Does De Zerbi Deserve The Newcastle Job?

Another possible candidate to be the next Newcastle boss is Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, who has come to 3/1 in the betting from 8/1.

The Italian has worked wonders at the south coast club, and it is thought he could land a top job when he eventually departs.

Bringing European football to the Amex is the highlight of De Zerbi's time at Brighton, although it has had an impact on their league form in the last couple of months.

De Zerbi is an ambitious manager, who has been talked about as a possible future Real Madrid manager and he might be aiming higher than Newcastle.

Conte Might Fancy Newcastle Challenge

What a coup it would be if Newcastle could persuade a former Premier League winner to take over from Howe.

Antonio Conte led Chelsea to the 2016/17 title, his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, but he left at the end of his second season.

Tottenham hoped he would be able to make them title contenders, but it didn't work out and the Italian was out of a job after 17 months.

Conte might relish the challenge that Newcastle presents and at 4/1, he is the third favourite.

Frank Could Be Good Fit

Should Newcastle's owners be searching for a manager with plenty of Premier League experience, then Brentford boss Thomas Frank could fit the bill.

He has guided the Bees to 13th and ninth place finishes in the Premier League, and it's widely thought he could get another team buzzing even more should he be handed further funds to play with.

Frank is 6/1 to be the next Newcastle gaffer, while fellow Premier League managers Marco Silva (Fulham) is 14/1 and Rob Edwards (Luton) is 33/1 with new betting sites.

Sanchez's Stock At An All-Time High

It takes a special manager to get in the way of the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, but Michel Sanchez is doing just that.

Sanchez has Girona sitting second and on course for a place in next season's Champions League just two seasons after winning promotion to La Liga.

It's easy to see why Sanchez is being linked with a number of high-profile vacancies and Newcastle might have to move fast if they want Sanchez as their next permanent manager.

Sanchez, who is attracting a lot of interest from other clubs, is 6/1 to be Newcastle's next manager, if they decide to get rid of Howe.

Rodgers To Make Premier League Comeback?

Brendan Rodgers is also among the favourites on betting apps to be the next Newcastle manager, especially after beating Rangers 2-1 in the Old Firm derby recently.

The 8/1 chance is currently in his second spell as Celtic manager, but he has plenty of Premier League experience after previously guiding Liverpool to second in the 2013-14 season, after the Reds finished two points behind champions Manchester City.

Rodgers also led Leicester City to their first FA Cup trophy win in their history, but he departed the Foxes in April 2023 after their form dipped and they went on to be relegated from the Premier League.

Enzo Destined For Premier League

One way or another, Enzo Maresca looks set to be managing in the Premier League next season.

Current club Leicester sit top of the Championship with a four-point gap between the Foxes and third-placed Ipswich Town.

Maresca served his time under Pep Guardiola and has done a great job at Leicester in his first managerial role.

However, a Financial Fair Play charge hangs over the club next season, which could lead to a possible points deduction.

That might be enough to persuade Maresca (10/1) to move on to a bigger job and Newcastle might be a good fit for both parties.

Nagelsmann Focus Is On Euros

Julian Nagelsmann has drifted to 12/1, and he is unlikely to leave his job as the German national team boss for now.

With the Euros to prepare for on home soil, it's very unlikely Nagelsmann will be appointed Newscastle's next manager any time soon.

Newcastle don't have time to wait until after the Euros for their new manager to start work.

Cooper An Outsider For Toon Job

Former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is 25/1 in the betting for the Magpies vacancy.

Cooper's credentials include taking Forest from the bring of relegation to League One to promotion to the Premier League in a matter of months.

Newcastle fans are likely to demand a bigger managerial name than Cooper though.

One of the more romantic appointments would see Newcastle legend Alan Shearer swap his Match of the Day punditry for a second stint as the Magpies' boss, but at 1,000/1 he is far more likely to stick to his day job.

However, being a boyhood Newcastle fan himself, Shearer knows just how desperate the club's fans are to win a major trophy.

So, whoever does land the coveted position when Howe one day departs, they will have plenty of pressure to succeed, but they will also be backed in their droves by the St. James' Park faithful.
