Nat Coombs' NFL Week 12 Tips Including Colts @ Chiefs

Week 12 of the NFL began with the Bills losing to the Texans in Houston, which leaves Buffalo two games behind the AFC East leaders New England Patriots.

The win keeps alive the Texans' hopes of reaching the play-offs, but how will the standings look after the Panthers and 49ers wrap up the week's action at Levi's Stadium?

Nat Coombs' NFL Week 11 Tips:

Seahawks @ Titans: Darnold To Help Seattle To Cover

How much should we read into Sam Darnold's meltdown against the Los Angeles Rams last week?

His four-pick horror-show has fired up the naysayers, who have been waiting for this to happen, using it to emphasise that he can’t be trusted and will unravel in the post-season.

However, that's not fair on Darnold, who has proved consistently over last season, and for most of this, that he has the ability to be a top-12 quarterback in the league, and certainly one capable of making a Super Bowl.

He came into the league at a very young age (21) for a QB in one of the worst situations imaginable - the New York Jets.

GAME NOTES:

Sam Darnold has thrown 8 interceptions in his last 4 games
Titans defense only has 2 picks in last 8 games

Situation is everything in football, and his success in Minnesota last year filled him with confidence and emphasised his upside.

He forces the issue too much and has a tendency to go on tilt, which is most likely why he won’t ever cut into that top tier, but he can find a flow state against most teams.

And much of the scepticism is fuelled by skewed optics. A wild pick from Darnold is a flawed QB, whereas from a player like Brett Favre, or latterly Matthew Stafford, it's part of the deal with a gunslinger.

What’s particularly interesting about last week is that Seattle had a shot to win the game at the death, despite everything.

GAME NOTES:

The Titans offense has given up the most sacks (42)
The Seahawks defense is ranked 4th with 32 QB sacks

They’re still contenders. I still believe in the rehabilitated Darnold.

This week, against a Tennessee Titans team spiralling into the abyss, with a receiving core further banged up with the loss of Calvin Ridley to injured reserve, they’ll cover the big spread on betting apps and reaffirm their status as legit.

Vikings @ Packers: Expect Points At Lambeau

The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers are two teams with a quarterback headache they didn’t expect at this stage of proceedings.

The Vikes moved on from Darnold and Daniel Jones to go all-in on 'rookie' JJ McCarthy who is clearly a fighter, but even by rookie standards – yes, it’s his sophomore season, but to all intents and purposes it's year 1 – looks shaky.

The Packers – and a lot of other voices - were premature in anointing Jordan Love as the chosen one, certainly the over hype that he could break into the top five quarterback power rankings.

But in turn, he hasn’t become a bad quarterback overnight – he’s just not a great one, yet.

GAME NOTES:

The Vikings have lost Q2 in each of their last 7 games
The Packers have outscored opponents 30-13 in Q2 at Lambeau

The Vikings defense has kept them in theoretical contention this year, but between McCarthy and the injured – and abject – Carson Wentz, the offense hasn’t kept up its end of the bargain.

This has caused consternation amongst its top players, including the elite, but frustrated Justin Jefferson.

I expect both offenses to rebound a little this week, and thus I like the over on a (relatively) low total on the best betting sites.

Colts @ Chiefs: The Chiefs Aren't Done Yet

I covered the Chiefs loss to the Broncos in the FIVE studio last weekend.

Whilst it was a blow to their AFC West title ambitions, the talk of their season being over and Patrick Mahomes jumping the shark, is inaccurate and absurd.

Sure, he uncharacteristically overthrew a few passes, but Kansas City were up against a ferocious Denver defense.

There were passages of play for the Chiefs offense that were fluent, and sharp, particularly the second half when Travis Kelce featured strongly.

GAME NOTES:

Colts have scored a rushing TD in every game this season
Chiefs have scored a rushing TD in all but 1 game this season

Their receiving corps is fully re-upped, Chris Jones only has upside to anchor this defense to a stronger second half of the season, so I still think they make the play-offs.

As we discussed on my podcast this week (The Nat Coombs Show), given how flawed and wide open the AFC is, I’m intrigued by their potential if they do make the dance.

At Arrowhead and needing to win, the Chiefs should get it done.
