Premier League Quick Preview: Manchester United Vs Tottenham

Premier League Quick Preview: Manchester United Vs Tottenham

Saturday’s late kick-off is a meeting of two clubs whose seasons have gone badly wrong already, and two managers who will both have read the table more than once this week.

Manchester United are 12th on five points - their joint-fewest at this stage of a Premier League season - after a run that has taken in a 5-2 win over Ipswich and defeats at Hull and at home to Manchester City.

Tottenham are bottom. They went the first four games without scoring, the first time in the club’s 144-year history, and their two goals so far both arrived in the last four minutes of a 3-2 home defeat by Aston Villa. United are favourites on betting apps.

Everything After The Break

United have not kept a clean sheet in their five matches, but they have been feast or famine at the other end - five of their eight goals came in one afternoon against Ipswich.

Seven of those eight arrived after half-time. Tottenham’s two goals have come after the 85th minute.

Spurs have failed to score in four of five, and both teams have found the net in just one of their games. United’s fixtures are averaging 3.2 goals, Tottenham’s 2.0.

Manchester United have averaged 22.6 shots a game - comfortably the highest figure in the division - registering at least 14 every outing, including 33 against Ipswich and 29 at Craven Cottage last time out.

They have also been the best protected, allowing 10.6 a game and never more than 18.

The problem is what happens next: United have converted 7.1% of their 113 shots, the fifth-lowest rate in the division, and have hit the woodwork six times, more than anybody else. The projection has this as the busiest game of the round for shots at 31.3, and only the seventh-highest for goals.

Hot Streaks & Stats:

  • Manchester United have conceded in each of their five league games.
  • United have hit the woodwork six times, more than any other Premier League side.
  • Tottenham have won 38 corners in five games, 7.6 per game and the most in the league, including 10 at Forest in a match in which they had no shots on target.
  • Tottenham have failed to win any of their last 48 games in all competitions in which they conceded first (D11, L37).

Michael Carrick needs a win after United failed to win any of their last three matches in all competitions, while Roberto de Zerbi knows the only way is up for Spurs after a disastrous start to the campaign.

The Red Devils won this fixture 2-0 thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes, but only after Cristian Romero was sent off in the 29th minute.
