Robert Huth Expects Netherlands To Beat England In Euro 2024 Semi-Finals
Former Germany defender Robert Huth believes Netherlands will beat England in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 semi-final in Dortmund.
The three-time Premier League winner, speaking exclusively to Gambling.com, told host Alan McInally that the Three Lions are likely to be feeling the effects of their wins against Slovakia and Switzerland which both came after extra-time.
England will next face a Dutch team that have grown stronger as the tournament has progressed, eliminating Romania and Turkey in normal time in the round of 16 and quarter-finals respectively.
Netherlands are the 5/1 outsiders with football betting sites to win the European Championship, with England second favourites behind Spain at 5/2.
Taylor Decision Outrageous
However, Huth started the discussion by criticising English referee Anthony Taylor for failing to award Germany a penalty in Friday’s defeat by Spain.
Jamal Musiala’s cross struck the hand of Marc Cucurella in extra time when the score was tied at 1-1, but the official did not check with the VAR to see if an offence had been committed.
Huth said: “It’s scandalous. It’s outrageous. I’ve had a couple of days to think about it. I’ve watched it again and rewatched it.
“If that happens in the middle of the park and, say, Kroos tries to flick one round the corner in midfield and the guy handles it, that’s a free-kick – never mind the ball being in the box and he’s blocking a shot.
“I mean, just watch Cucurella’s face. He’s gone ‘oh!’ He knew. Is this too obvious to give? Sometimes a decision can be so obvious that a ref says ‘is it?’
“I was just waiting for him to blow the whistle and then when you saw the replay, and for them not go back and have a check on VAR, it’s just scandalous.”
Dutch Courage Will Prevail Against Three Lions
When asked to predict the winner of England’s clash with Netherlands, Huth was less certain about the outcome, but thinks the Three Lions could be tired after coming through their last two games in extra-time.
He said: “Ooh, that’s a good one. Two extra times for England – you’d think they’ll be feeling it going into the third game.
“I think Netherlands will just edge it. It will be one-goal difference. It will be a tight, tight game, but I just think Netherlands will have too much.”
