Rugby League Searches for New Title Sponsor as Betfred Deal Ends in 2026

Betfred's run as title sponsor of rugby league's Super League reaches its contracted end after the 2026 season, and neither the bookmaker nor Rugby League Commercial has announced an extension.
Readers who follow the UK betting sites market will know few sponsorships in British sport have lasted as long.
A Record Deal
The current deal was a three-year agreement the two sides unveiled on October 10, 2023, a record-breaking renewal that took the partnership into its tenth season in 2026. On the published terms, it expires at the close of this campaign.
That agreement, worth 25 per cent more than the previous record deal, widened Betfred's involvement well beyond the men's competition.
It covered the men's, women's and wheelchair Challenge Cup competitions, the Women's and Wheelchair Super Leagues and shirt sponsorship for the England men's, women's and wheelchair teams.
Betfred first became title sponsor of the men's Super League in 2017.
Betfred Cuts Shops Under Tax Pressure
What has changed is Betfred's own position. On July 31, 2026 the operator opened a consultation to close 132 of its betting shops and cut more than 600 jobs from September, a move that would leave it with around 1,100 outlets.
Chief executive Jo Whittaker tied the decision to costs rather than trading: "The combined impact of higher employer national insurance contributions, wage inflation, increases in gambling taxes and wider economic uncertainty has left us with no choice."
Each closed shop is estimated to cost British racing about GBP 30,000 a year in levy and media-rights payments, putting the annual hit to the sport near GBP 4 million.
The Tax Backdrop
The pressure traces to the November 2025 Budget. From April 2026 remote gaming duty rose from 21 per cent to 40 per cent, and a new 25 per cent duty on online sports betting is due from 2027, covering all sports except horse racing.
Those increases fall hardest on online play, while Betfred's shop estate carries the payroll costs, and together they have reshaped how the company spends. That is the context in which its largest sponsorship now sits, and it explains why free bets and marketing budgets across the sector are under review.
No Confirmation Either Way
For now, nothing is confirmed either way. Betfred has not said it will walk away from Super League, and Rugby League Commercial has not named a replacement or announced a new deal. The competition will keep the Betfred name for the rest of the 2026 season.
