Rule 4 Deductions Explained: How They Affect Your Payout

What Is Rule 4?

Rule 4 is a standard deduction applied to winning bets when a horse is withdrawn from a race after final declarations.

It applies to all bookmakers and betting sites in Britain and Ireland, and there's no way to opt out.

The logic is simple: when a horse is withdrawn, every remaining runner has a better chance of winning than when you placed your bet.

Rule 4 reduces your winnings to reflect that shift, rather than letting you collect at the price you originally took or at the SP.

Your stake is never affected by Rule 4, while ante-post bets are exempt.

How It Affects Your Bet

The lower the withdrawn horse's price, the greater the impact on the field and the larger the deduction on your potential winnings. It runs from 5p to 90p per pound.

Some of the main points include, an odds-on favourite withdrawn at 1/9 or shorter costs you the maximum 90p; a 2/1 non-runner costs 30p; a 4/1 chance costs 20p; and anything 14/1 or bigger carries no deduction at all, since the market barely moves when a rank outsider drops out.

Example

  1. You back a horse at 5/1 with a £10 win bet - a potential £50 profit plus your stake.
  2. The favourite is then withdrawn at 2/1, triggering the 30p deduction.
  3. That's 30% off your profit, not your total return: £50 becomes £35.
  4. Add your £10 stake back, and you're paid £45 instead of the £60 you would have received.

Other Things To Know

If more than one horse is withdrawn, the deductions increase, although 90p in the pound is the maximum possible, no matter how many non-runners there are.

Each-way and place bets get the same deduction applied to both the win and place portions, but you keep the number of places from the original market, even if the field gets smaller.

If a withdrawal shrinks the field enough, "reverse Rule 4" can actually lengthen the odds on a "not to place" bet.

The Bottom Line

Rule 4 isn't a bookmaker penalty - it's a standard adjustment applied everywhere to keep prices fair once the field changes.

The deduction scales with how short the withdrawn horse's price was, from a maximum 90p in the pound down to nothing once it drifts out past 14/1.

Your stake is always safe, and it's worth remembering that ante-post bets sit outside the rule entirely.

Knowing roughly how the scale moves means a smaller-than-expected payout is never a surprise.
