Scottie Scheffler – The Key To USA Chances

To put it simply, I think Scottie Scheffler needs four points this week. If he does, the US are in the box seat.

Captain Keegan Bradley will be looking towards Scheffler to be the heartbeat of this American team.

At Whistling Straits in 2021 he had yet to win a tournament, but now he arrives as a two-time Masters champion, world number one and the most dominant golfer since Tiger Woods.

But the Ryder Cup does not always bow to the best.

Tiger himself only managed one victory in two decades of appearances, and the format has a way of piling pressure on great players.

If Scheffler starts slowly, the spotlight will be intense. He was in tears in Rome after being hammered in the foursomes by Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg, a reminder that even he is human.

This time around, he looks calmer, more businesslike, and very much a leader. If he delivers four points, it will be very hard to stop the USA.

But the pressure on him is enormous and that’s what makes him the most fascinating storyline of the week.

No Doubting Thomas For Ryder Cup Surge

Scheffler might carry the hype, but at the prices, Justin Thomas is the value. He is a Ryder Cup specialist.

This year he is enjoying the best putting run of his career, and that feels crucial on greens where everything inside 10 feet will matter.

He will be without his usual partner Jordan Spieth, though. Thomas has only ever played once without him in Ryder Cup so who Bradley pairs him with will be interesting.

Thomas is in form, thrives on this stage and he’s been trusted as a captain’s pick for a reason.

The two-time USPGA Championship winner looks overpriced at 12/1 with several golf betting sites to be the top American points scorer.

MacIntyre Last In Line

Bob MacIntyre was one of Europe’s quiet heroes in Rome, going unbeaten and picking up 2.5 points from three matches.

He is fiery and wears his heart on his sleeve, but proved last time he can keep his emotions in check when it matters most.

Europe captain Luke Donald had said in the build-up that the Scot’s outstanding progression since Italy had caught his eye.

I saw that as a clear hint Bob will play a bigger role this week. When it comes to the anchor role on Sunday, Donald won’t want a rookie in there. He’ll want someone who has been through it (he went off last in Rome) and shown they can handle pressure.

Bob’s win at the Canadian Open last year, leading from the front to close it out against a top-class field, was proof of his patience and steel.

At 4/1 to be last out in singles, he looks an excellent bet.

Rupert Bell Ryder Cup Tips: Top Billing For Tyrrell

Tyrrell Hatton was key in Rome and will be again here. Bethpage is a brutal ball-striker’s test, and Hatton’s Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green stats are among the very best.

That reliability, combined with his natural fire, makes him invaluable to Europe.

He should play four sessions, and if he does, he should score points.

At 9/1, he’s my pick to be top European.
