Unlicensed UK Football Sponsors Are Already In Esports

Unlicensed UK Football Sponsors Are Already In Esports

The gambling brands that Premier League clubs could soon be forced to drop are already deeply embedded in esports, raising the same regulatory questions for a sector that has largely escaped scrutiny so far.

Stake.com, the crypto casino at the centre of the UK government's push to ban unlicensed gambling sponsorship in British sport, also backs top-tier esports organisations including Team Vitality and Astralis, according to market data from Esports Charts and the teams' own announcements.

The Football Trigger

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) ran an eight-week consultation on banning unlicensed gambling sponsorship across all sectors, including sport, from July 15 to September 9, 2026. The government wants to close a loophole that lets operators without a Gambling Commission licence sponsor UK teams as long as their platforms are geo-blocked to British consumers, even though that block is routinely bypassed with a VPN.

Entain, which holds a UK licence through its betting sites Ladbrokes and Coral, used its own submission to the consultation to push for the ban to take effect immediately rather than in 2027.

The operator's research found 11 of the 20 Premier League clubs now have sponsorship or advertising arrangements with unlicensed gambling operators, up from the government's own estimate of 8 clubs, including Everton (Stake.com), Fulham (SBOTOP), Chelsea (8XBet), Tottenham Hotspur (VSBet), Nottingham Forest (FUN88) and newly-signed Sunderland (Shuffle). Entain also forecasts UK staking with unlicensed operators will nearly double from £17 billion in 2025 to more than £33 billion by 2028.

The Same Brands Are Already In Esports

Stake's Everton shirt deal has drawn most of the UK scrutiny, but the operator's sponsorship footprint runs well beyond football. Team Vitality, one of European esports' most decorated organisations, carries Stake branding, according to market tracking from Esports Charts.

Danish Counter-Strike org Astralis added Stake as its main jersey sponsor in March 2026, a deal the team announced directly on its own channels alongside quotes from CRO Jakob Kristensen calling it "a strategically important partnership." Team Vitality competes at events held in the UK, including tournaments on the ESL and BLAST circuits, the same live environment DCMS's consultation is aimed at.

Esports Charts data also shows gambling brands occupy the primary jersey slot on nine of ten Americas Counter-Strike 2 teams and 12 of 20 in Europe, spanning both licensed operators and platforms with no UK licence. That density means any UK sponsorship ban written for football sponsors would, on paper, catch some of the same brands and some of the same teams once they play in Britain.

Why Esports Has Stayed Out Of The Conversation So Far

Publishers have their own vetting layered on top of national law. Riot Games allows Tier 1 League of Legends and VALORANT teams in the Americas and EMEA to carry betting sponsors, but only with Riot's approval and only where the partner uses GRID, Riot's official data platform, alongside integrity and responsible-gambling programmes funded in part by revenue share to Tier 2.

That publisher-level gatekeeping is one reason esports sponsorship has not faced the same domestic pressure as Premier League shirt deals, even where the underlying operators overlap.

DCMS's consultation closed on September 9 without esports named as a distinct category, and the government has said any ban could take effect from August 2027. Whether enforcement extends to events and broadcasts staged in the UK, rather than just domestic league sponsorship, is one of the questions the consultation response has yet to answer, but the overlap in sponsor names means esports organisations competing on British soil have a direct stake in how it is answered.
