Which Football Teams Have The Most Foul-Mouthed Fans?

A sport that often incites equal parts excitement and frustration, it’s little surprise that football fans are famed for their foul-mouthed language.

In fact, 70% of supporters profess to swearing at least occasionally, with a third cursing either often or very frequently. But which football fans are the biggest potty mouths?

After surveying 1,000 football fans of all ages, locations, and allegiances, we’ve ranked the Premier League fanbases that swear the most, as well as the cities in the UK with the worst language.

And to finish off, we’ve even revealed the most common curses used by football supporters up and down the country.

So, without further ado, read on to see where your favourite team ranks.

Which Premier League fanbases have the biggest potty mouths?

The Premier League's most foul-mouthed fans

Analysing our data, we can reveal that Liverpool football club officially have the highest rate of foul-mouthed fans.

In fact, almost one in 10 football fans (9.8%) consider the Merseysiders to be the worst-spoken - which rises to one in seven 25-34-year-olds.

Interestingly, even respondents from the region voted the fanbase as one of the most foul-mouthed (12.7%), while only 1.6% of Liverpudlians consider local rivals Everton to have the worst language.

The North-West side also tops the list in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, London, and Manchester.

Next up, Manchester United host the second-highest rate of swearing supporters, with 8% of football fans considering the Red Devils the biggest culprits.

Meanwhile, the top two are followed by London trio Chelsea (6.1%) - who are the biggest potty mouths according to 35-44-year-olds - West Ham United (5.9%), and Arsenal (5.1%) – though, you can probably forgive the language coming from Gunners supporters, considering the late-season implosion that saw their team miss out on a first league title in nearly 20 years.

Next up, Newcastle United take sixth, with 4.3% of the vote (although respondents aged 65+ consider the North East side to have the worst-spoken fans, 9.7%) ahead of treble winners Manchester City (3.9%), while Everton record a score of just 3.7%.

This comes despite the Toffees only just avoiding relegation last season – though, respondents in Edinburgh (13%) and Sheffield (17.6%) seem to think differently to the rest of football fans across the rest of the UK!

Rounding out the Premier League’s top 10 potty mouth fanbases, we have Brighton and Hove Albion, with a score of 2.6%, and Tottenham Hotspur (2.5%).

However, similar to Everton, you’d maybe expect Spurs to rank higher on our list considering the poor league performance of last season!

At the other end of the table, Premier League newcomers Sheffield United (0.8%) are the least sweary team in the league, joined by Nottingham Forest (0.9%), and Wolverhampton Wanderers (1%).

Meanwhile, other newbies Luton Town and Burnley also rank among the best-behaved.

Which UK cities are the most foul-mouthed?

The most foul-mouthed cites in the UK

When it comes to regional potty mouths, no other UK city has a higher rate of swearers than London.

Incredibly, almost one in five Brits (18.6%) consider those in the capital to have the worst language.

Curiously, it’s actually those in the South East who have the lowest opinion of Londoners (25.5%)!

Next up, Liverpool takes second, with 13.3% of the UK considering Merseyside to be the country’s swearing capital, including 28.6% of respondents in Northern Ireland, while Glasgow ranks third (13.2%).

In fact, Glasgow is far-and-away the most potty-mouthed Scottish city, with Edinburgh the next-placed location with a score of just 2.6%.

Meanwhile, Manchester is the nation’s fourth-most foul-mouthed metropolis, ahead of Newcastle (5.9%) and Birmingham (5.8%). Finally, Belfast scored 2.7%, ahead of Yorkshire pair Leeds (2.4%) and Sheffield (2.1%).

What are the most common swear words?

Turning our attention to the business end of the article, it’s time to look at the most common swear words used across the UK.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two most common curses, used by about half of the population, we have the S and F-words, ahead of ‘bloody’ (37.3%), ‘bastard’ (22.4%), and ‘dickhead’ (20.7%).

Meanwhile, one in seven Brits gratuitously use the C-word; though, this increases when you visit Leeds (22.7%), Liverpool (23.8%), Newcastle (22.6%), and Sheffield (23.5%).

From Manchester City to newly promoted Luton Town, it’s interesting to see which teams and cities are home to the worst-spoken supporters.
