Which Teams Are The Best At Building 2-0 Leads?

In a recent post-match interview after Liverpool had beaten Wolves 2-1 at Anfield, Andy Robertson said: "At 2-0 at half-time, we know that can be one of the most dangerous scores in football."

Is it though, Andy?

Our research team at Gambling.com have analysed every game played in the top four leagues in England this season to determine how many times it has happened and how often teams go on to win from that position.

Some of the best football betting sites specialise in paying out when teams take a 2-0 lead, so be sure to bookmark this page as we'll be updating it every week.

So far this season, teams in the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two have led 2-0 a total of 594 times.

Those sides have gone on to win on 544 occasions (91.6%), while only 14 teams (2.4%) have lost after leading by that score.

Norwich were the most recent team to lose after leading Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 with 26 minutes to play, but they lost 3-2.

Leeds lead the way with 18 games in which they have led 2-0 and incredibly, they have won all 18 games by a combined score of 49-1.

What makes Daniel Farke's side's achievement all the more impressive is the fact they have taken a 2-0 lead against 14 different teams.

The Championship leaders will hope to take another 2-0 lead in their next league game at home to Swansea on Saturday, March 29.

The last time Leeds surrendered a 2-0 lead in a league match was in February 2023, when they led 2-0 at Old Trafford before Manchester United rallied to claim a point in the Premier League clash.

The Whites have won all 33 league games since, including the play-offs.

Leeds Emphatically Lead The Way

Leeds are not only leading the way in the Championship, but they also lead all four leagues in the number of times they have led 2-0 this season.

United's trip to Queens Park Rangers was the first time the Elland Road side had trailed 2-0 in the Championship, but they rallied to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw.

However, they have led 2-0 in 18 of their 38 league games and the best betting sites have Leeds as favourites to win the Championship.

Slot's Reds Are Ruthless When Leading 2-0

We didn't have to wait too long for the first occurrence of a team taking a 2-0 lead in this season's Premier League.

Arne Slot's first game in charge of Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp's departure took the Reds to Portman Road to face newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

Slot's side came through a potential tricky opener to win 2-0, thanks to second-half goals by Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah to secure the points.

It set the tone for Liverpool, who are 12 points clear at the top of the table and they remain favourites on betting apps to win this season's title.

So far this season, Slot's side have led 2-0 a total of 14 times, taking a perfect 42 points from a possible 42.

Hopes of a treble were dashed in six days when Paris Saint-Germain knocked them out of the Champions League, while Newcastle beat them in the final of the Carabao Cup. With just nine matches left to play, it's Liverpool's title to lose.

Liverpool host Everton in their next league game on April 2 and they will hope to score the first two goals of the game for the 15th time this season.

In fact, since the start of the 2023/24 season, Liverpool, who are on course to land their 20th league title, have won their last 25 games when leading 2-0 in the league.

The Reds, along with Championship side Burnley, are the only sides in the top four divisions yet to trail 2-0 in the league this season.

Leaders Walsall Feeling The Heat

Walsall's 12-point lead at the top of League Two in January has been reduced to just three after a dramatic loss of form.

Eleven points from a possible 36 suggest the pressure is getting to Mat Sadler's side.

If they fail to win automatic promotion to League One, then they might look to their trip to Cheltenham where they blew a 2-0 lead in injury time.

They had to settle for a point that night in what was the 13th time they had led 2-0 in a League Two game and they have taken 37 points from a possible 39.

Next up for the Saddlers is a trip to Gillingham on Saturday.

Foxes The Worst Culprits At Trailing 2-0

If you are putting together a 2-0 acca, then it's important to look at teams who regularly fall behind by that score.

The biggest culprits so far this season are Leicester, who have fallen behind 2-0 in 16 league contests this term, the latest of which came at home to Manchester United, who beat the Foxes 3-0 on Sunday evening.

Incredibly, that loss to United was the seventh time in their last nine league games in which they conceded the first two goals.

Plymouth's hopes of avoiding relegation to League One suffered a blow when they lost 3-2 at home to Derby in a crucial relegation clash.

The Pilgrims trailed 2-0 before restoring parity one minute into the second half. However, a late Marcus Harness goal gave the Rams all three points and leaves Plymouth bottom of the table, six points from safety.

We hope this helps you when you build your next 2-0 up football acca.
