Professional Experience

Roy's gambling career began in greyhound racing. After working in kennels, he became a professional trainer and later worked in the U.S., where an opportunity to write about his experiences for the Racing Post helped launch his journalism career. He subsequently became editor of Greyhound Monthly.

After moving to Ireland, Roy established himself on the professional poker circuit. He won televised tournaments, finished runner-up in the 2002 World Heads-Up Poker Championship and attracted sponsorship from gambling brands including Ladbrokes, Betfair and BetVictor. His live tournament earnings now exceed $858,000, with results spanning more than two decades.

His experience at the table led to work as a Sky Sports poker commentator and gambling journalist. Roy later expanded his betting analysis into other sports, becoming a regular Formula 1 betting expert on At The Races in 2012.

Roy is also the author of Life's a Gamble: The High Stakes and Low Life of a Poker Professional, published by Transworld in 2009, which chronicles his journey through greyhound racing, gambling journalism and professional poker.
