The Montreal Canadiens are in the midst of one of the worst seasons in their storied franchise history, sporting a 13-33-7-0 record. So, why is this a team to consider making a play with your NHL betting money?

They have won five consecutive games, scoring an average of 3.25 goals. They won four straight in a four-game road stand and are now coming off a 2-1 road with over the Ottawa Senators.

Tonight, Montreal heads to Winnipeg to take on the Jets, who are 23-20-3-1 for the season and a mediocre 14-12-2-1 in their home games.

The Canadiens are 5-16-6-0 in their road games, but as a professional bettor, this is a great betting opportunity to back the motley-looking underdog.

The Netminders Matchup

The Canadiens’ goaltender Jake Allen is 5-16-2 this season, but has a decent 3.15 goals-against average, including two shutouts. He was drafted in the second round by the St. Louis Blues in 2007.

Winnipeg will start Connor Hellebuyck, who is 17-19-8 with a 2.88 goals-against average, including three shutouts. He was Winnipeg’s fifth-round draft pick and 130 overall selection in the 2012 NHL draft.

Team Rankings

The Canadiens rank 31 in the NHL by averaging 2.283 goals per game. The Jets rank 18, scoring 2.906 goals per game.

The Canadiens are last with a 0.611 scoring efficiency ratio. By comparison, the Jets are much better, ranking 18 with a 0.975 scoring efficiency ratio.

The Supporting Analytics

I am on the Canadiens in this matchup using the moneyline, which is currently lining the Jets as a -225 home favorite and making the Canadiens a +170 underdog.

The following betting algorithm has produced a 101-67 moneyline record over the past five seasons and has made the $100 bettor a $4,500 profit averaging a +125-underdog bet.

The requirements are to be on road teams using the moneyline that are off a win to a divisional rival and playing with two or more days of rest.

Although it’s hard to believe, the Canadiens have owned the Jets, defeating them in the past five matchups. This is the first game between the two teams this season. Their last meeting was when the Canadiens eliminated the Jest in last year's playoffs four games to one.

Bet the Canadiens using the money line tonight.
