Since the Woman’s Super-G event was introduced in the 1988 Olympics, no woman has ever won back-to-back gold medals.

However, defending champion and Czechoslovakian Ester Ledecká will be looking to be the first to repeat in the Super-G and is already the first athlete to win two gold medals in two snow disciplines, alpine skiing and snowboarding, making things interesting for Olympics sports betting.

The Canadian Entries in the Super-G

The Super-G competition is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET today and will take place on ‘The Rock’ course at the Beijing National Ski Centre in Yanqing. There are 44 athletes representing 24 nations.

Marie Michele Gagnon is Canada’s top hope for a medal. She is lined at +8000 to win the gold at PowerPlay. She is the second oldest athlete in the event at 32 and perhaps that experience is needed to navigate the treacherous course.

Gagnon has been a member of the Canadian Alpine team since she was 18 and goes by the nickname “Mitch.”

She has won four medals in the FIS World Cup Tour that includes a pair of Alpine Combined Gold medals. Most recently, she finished sixth in the 2021 Super-G FIS World Ski Championships held in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy.

Her most impressive results are in the Woman’s Downhill, in which she has finished fifth in the 2022 FIS World Cup even held in Zauchensee, Austria and a ninth-place finish in the FIS World Cup event held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

The PowerPlay Sportsbook app has her lined at +2000 to medal and for a pizza-money type bet I will be betting on her to appear on the podium. This is a speed event and that is often decided by hundredths of a second and one perfect run is all it takes for a would-be long shot to earn a medal.

Ronni Remme, 25, is the other alpine skier representing Canada. She has been skiing since the age of 2 and joined the National Ski Academy at 11 and made skiing her way of life. She earned a spot on the 2018 Canadian Olympic team and has had a handful of breakthrough results on the World Cup tour.

PointsBet Canada is the Official Sportsbook of the Canadian Olympic team. The PointsBet app and website are expected to be launched soon and to celebrate, they are giving a lucky Canadian sports fan a chance to win a $1,000 Fan Pack.

American Favourite Having Tough Games

The top American in the event, 2019 world champion Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. Shiffrin has not had a good Olympics so far after failing to complete the giant slalom and the slalom. She even considered withdrawing from this event until she had a practice session that “went well,” according to U.S head woman’s Alpine coach Paul Kristofic.

Still, the confidence of this former World Champion must be rattled from the previous two failures in this Olympics.

As sports fans, the ‘bounce-back’ of a Champion provides the most exciting viewing experience and tonight, we may see Shiffrin do exactly that and win a medal. She is +1100 to win and +250 to medal at Mr. Green Sportsbook.

Shiffrin is dating the current Men’s World Cup leading skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who was the favourite to win the gold in the Men’s Downhill but failed to medal, so this couple will be looking for much better results over their remaining events. Kilde did win the second Olympic medal of his career with a silver in the alpine combined event.
