NHL Picks: Best Bets on Montreal and Calgary tonight

The NHL week continues with 10 games on Tuesday night. Ontario sports bettors should be encouraged that Montreal and Calgary are at home tonight against teams capable of giving up a few goals.

Let’s get you ready for your NHL betting by looking at tonight's action, then we'll touch on what went wrong last night.

Minnesota Wild at Montreal Canadiens

The Wild and Canadiens drop the puck on Tuesday, and this could feature some offence. Minnesota and Montreal often get cratered possession-wise, and their special teams are only sometimes special.

The big problem for Montreal is the defense and special teams. Much like Minnesota, they get pinned in their zone too often. Kirill Kaprizov has to be looking forward to this matchup. Matching up the Nick Suzuki line would be a bad idea here, yet Martin St. Louis may have little choice.

Betting momentum keeps trending in Minnesota’s direction for this game. Currently, the Wild is a 1.54 road favourite on the moneyline. Marc-Andre Fleury is slowly starting to play better in goal for Minnesota, which is excellent news for Canadian Sports Bettors.

Bettors in Canada should look at the Over on a night like this. That 1.76 number could be better, but not wrong, either. An attractive hedge involves looking at Montreal leading after 20 minutes. It stands at 2.92 now (anything around 3 is quite good). Montreal is a team that can feed off the home crowd, and tossing a fractional wager here and there is okay.

These two teams, as we said, can score goals. It is the defending part that is questionable. Expect shot props to see heavier activity later. Montreal can give up 35+ shots, and Minnesota just yielded 43 the other night to Boston.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Calgary Flames

With only two Canadian teams in action tonight, that kept things focused. Do not fret. We saved a gem for the readers. That is the Flames entertaining the Penguins. Pittsburgh comes off a game where it led Edmonton 3-1 in the second period before allowing five unanswered goals in a 6-3 loss. Somehow, Pittsburgh held Connor McDavid pointless. It blows a lot of people’s minds.

Pittsburgh did something rare on Monday night. They fired 20+ first-period shots only to give up 26 in the second. Talk about a team that ran into a wall. The question is, did the recharge, or will tonight be more of the same?

How does that translate for tonight? It figures to be Jacob Markstrom in the net versus Casey DeSmith for Pittsburgh.

The teams may or may not trade goals. At the same time, trends suggest that, historically, these two teams bog down offensively with the whole back end of a back-to-back scenario. Pittsburgh scored one goal in the two meetings last season as Calgary swept.

Calgary, in regulation, is just about even at 1.92. The Under is risky at 2.04. With 6.5 goals, that number needs to be around 2.15 to 2.25. Tread carefully. The Flames’ puckline is something to wait on too. See if there is movement. After all, a late puck drop is beneficial.

Some Random Wagers For Canadian Sports Bettors Tonight

Here are some early ideas:

  • Montreal to lead after 20 - 2.92
  • Nick Suzuki anytime goal - 2.50, Over 2.5 shots - 2.45
  • Nazem Kadri Over 0.5 PowerPlay points - 2.50
  • Flames in regulation - 1.92

Numbers are via Sports Interaction and BetMGM.

What Went Wrong With Monday's Bets?

Bettors are accustomed to seeing all the wagers that went correctly in print. We are not like that. We like to take late shots on games at fractional units. Sometimes this works great, and sometimes we should have never clicked on that green button.

Betting on St. Louis to continue their momentum went disastrously wrong last night as Winnipeg stepped up in a 4-0 home win. Though it was nice to see the Under hit in Vegas, Toronto gave up two “first goals” to Vegas. The first one by Phil Kessel was disallowed. The Maple Leafs went on to lose 3-1.

Finally, we took Vancouver in regulation but live bet Carolina at 1-1. That did get back some of those losses.

Good luck, and take a look at our previews and much more. Thanks for reading!
