There have been some big legislative changes being discussed in the House of Commons – one specifically regarding single game wagering. Allowing single game wagers in Canada would be a huge step forward in terms of sports betting in Canada becoming more mainstream and widely accepted.
In February 2021, Bill C-218 was re-introduced (formerly Bill C-13) and proposes to amend the Canadian Criminal Code to allow single game sports betting and allows for eligibility and regulation for online sportsbooks in Canada.
Bill C-218 is sponsored by Conservative MP Kevin Waugh of Saskatchewan, with a goal of regulating the overall framework of sports betting in Canada. Those who support Bill C-218 are anxious to regulate sports betting in Canada and retain some of that money that is heading to sportsbooks not regulated by the Canadian lotteries and gaming associations.
On Thursday, April 22, 2021, Bill C-218 (Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act) was passed by the House of Commons and will be moving on to the Senate to be reviewed in May 2021.
What does this mean for sports betting in Canada? Well, the legislation would resemble what is occurring in the United States: provinces will be in charge of legalizing and regulating sports betting in their individual provinces.
As of August 2021, single-game betting was officially legalised making Ontario the first Canadian province to do so. With this comes the launch of online sports wagering from major North American sportsbooks opening up in Ontario. On 4th April 2022 is the official launch date for Ontario sports betting.
Until we see any legislative changes in Canada, we will be relying on the province-run lotteries and any sports betting sites that are licensed to operate in Canada.
The Kahnawake First Nation Gaming Commission has been able to issue sports betting licenses to online sports betting sites in Canada since 1996, which enables a site to operate in Canada. The Kahnawake Gaming Commission has recognized the growth in online sports betting and has offered licenses to operators as long as they have their data centers located in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake (South of Montreal, Quebec).
The province-run lotteries generate roughly $500 million in revenue on parlay betting each year. When it comes to these province-run lotteries, there are a few major names when it comes to sports betting: SportSelect, PlayNow, Pro-Line, and Mise-o-Jeu.
Sport Select is offered in the Western provinces, managed by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. This includes Sask Lotteries, Alberta Gaming, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, Lotteries Yukon, and the NWT and Nunavut Lotteries.
PlayNow is owned by the BCLC (British Columbia Lottery Corporation) and is also offered by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. Sports Action is also offered by the BCLC.
Pro-Line is a very popular option in the East, offered by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (which services the Maritime provinces), as well as the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission. Loto Quebec offers Mise-o-Jeu which is the French version of Pro-Line.
Over the past few years, these lotteries have moved towards modernizing their sports betting offering, creating apps for mobile betting and making convenience and mobile betting their main priority.
We have compiled informative betting guides to help you bet from whichever province you reside in. Making informed decisions and having a grasp on the legislation and sports betting options in your province will help you decide what’s best for your betting strategy.
Keep in mind, at these provincial lottery sites and sportsbooks, they only accept a parlay bet. The Bill that would allow single game betting is still sitting with the Senate to be passed as of April 2021.
When it comes to selecting an online sports betting site, you will want to do plenty of research to ensure you are selecting the right sportsbook for you, as well as looking at sportsbooks that operate in Canada.
The sportsbooks we recommend are reputable and offer excellence in the following categories: safety and security, convenient payment methods, competitive odds, generous bonuses and promotions, helpful and active customer support, as well as superior functionality. These are all important criteria we look at when reviewing sports betting sites and we ensure total transparency when it comes to our reviews.

Many online sports betting sites have set a primary focus on the United States and European countries, with Canadian-specific sports betting products often being overlooked. Though many products are functional in Canada, there are certain criteria to keep an eye on before signing up at an online sportsbook or betting site.
There is nothing worse than going through a sign up process only to get to the section to enter your country of residence and finding out that the sports betting site you are trying to register for does not allow residents of Canada. This is common, as some operators are not licensed to operate in Canada but don’t necessary block Canadian bettors. We will only recommend or share sites that you will be able to access and sign up for.
Not all sportsbooks are the same and we understand that. We’ve personally used each sportsbook we review and have gone through every step – start to finish. Many sports betting sites excel in certain areas more than others, so ensuring that a sportsbook has everything you need will help make your betting experience that much better.

If you tend to line shop, you will understand how difficult it is to get through that sign up process and discover that the sportsbook you have just created an account with does not accept your preferred method of payment. Sportsbook reviews come in handy here, as we outline the deposit and withdrawal options, as well as minimum and maximum deposit and withdrawal amounts.
This would come in handy if you are a new bettor and only have $20 to start your account off with – it could prevent you from signing up for a betting site with a minimum deposit of $50. Or if you want to bet with an AMEX and the sports betting site only accepts Visa and MasterCard. These are things that can be a big inconvenience if you aren’t informed.
We will also go through the length of time it may take to make your payments and withdrawals, as that could affect your choices as well – you don’t want to sign up for an account on Super Bowl Sunday only to find out it will take 24 hours to process your deposit.
Some sportsbooks require more information and you will have to jump through more hoops than others. Naturally, sports betting sites have made their sign up processes more streamlined and allow bettors to register and deposit much faster with almost no wait time.
However, some sportsbooks do still have a bit of a wait to authenticate identification, so it’s important to know how much of your information is required, if you’ll need to send in a copy of your ID or passport, and how long the process takes overall.
We do all of this for you, to ensure you won’t make it halfway through the sign up process and be greeted with any surprises.
Every sports betting site in Canada that we recommend is regulated and licensed. We ensure full transparency by listing their licensing numbers, corporate details, and customer support information. You can rest assured that any recommendation by Gambling.com is a legitimate and regulated sportsbook.
We feel that this is one of the most important criteria for an online sports betting site. Not all sportsbooks are the same and many offer different odds depending on the event. They are all competing for your business, so you can take advantage by line shopping, or hunting down the best odds for the sports or particular event you want to bet on.
Sportsbooks tend to have a great odds selection and include all the popular betting types such as moneylines, point spreads and totals for each professional sport. If you want to bet on something that’s a little less common, you can just double check that the sportsbook has odds on that particular sport or event.
For example, if you plan to bet on politics for example, some sportsbooks may not see the value in political odds, so you will want to check that they have the particular entertainment event first.
Another thing to look for in reference to odds selection is how the odds are displayed. Many North Americans prefer American odds over decimal odds or fractional odds, but if you can toggle which odds type you’d like to view your odds in, that’s a sign of a great online bookmaker.
Another huge factor we dive into while reviewing sportsbooks includes the user experience. We want to ensure that you are using a functional and fast betting site and ensuring that there are no bugs or lagging that could affect your experience. This is important when it comes to recommending a sportsbook.
Many bettors tend to be looking for mobile apps that can be easily downloaded on their phones, which can be a huge bonus when betting on the go. The convenience of mobile apps and mobile friendly websites is a huge factor when many are selecting a sportsbook, so we want to ensure you are fully aware of the availability.
We love special features that make sportsbooks stand out. Having features like bet tracking, early cash out and easy withdrawals are some of the factors we look for and love to see.
Obviously, we would never recommend a sports betting site that is unsafe, so we take this section very seriously. We only recommend SSL-certified secure sportsbooks, ensuring that your personal information is protected, but also your payments, document storage and betting history.
The biggest stigma around online sports betting sites was created by the unregulated market, where sportsbooks were seen as unsafe and untrustworthy. This stigma sometimes is carried into the regulated market, and we can assure there is nothing to fear with sportsbooks recommended by Gambling.com.

As we mentioned, sportsbooks all compete with each other for your business. This means they will make offers and create bonuses to try to sway you in their direction. These bonuses are a great way to pad your bankroll. Reading the terms and conditions takes some time, but we’ve taken the work out of it by reviewing the terms and conditions of every bonus offered by these betting sites.
Many bonuses have rollover requirements, which means you will need to play through your deposit amount a certain amount of times before your bonus money can be released to you. Others have specific time limits, or are only available to be used on certain games. Our experts review these conditions and make sure you aren’t signing up for a bonus you aren’t prepared to handle.
Our sportsbook review experts include active sports bettors who regularly wager on sports, betting market experts, sports traders and odds makers. We ensure that resources are pooled - we get different opinions of a particular sportsbook, so we ensure that the review is subjective and thorough.
Our experts comb through sportsbooks and betting sites to ensure you get the most thorough review possible. Whether you’re an experienced sports bettor or a beginner, you can benefit from reading in-depth sportsbook reviews as they will provide important information before you decide to sign up at an online betting site.
In fact, the Gambling.com Group team of experts have received awards for the efforts put in on these reviews from industry peers and panels. We pride ourselves in the transparency and dedication our team provides to creating subjective reviews to help our users make informed decisions when selecting a sportsbook.

Canadian bettors have a wide variety of betting sites available, so making the decision can be the hardest part. Choosing a sportsbook that meets your needs is the most important. We recommend looking for the following criteria and considering how it might affect your betting experience:
Ensure that your online sportsbook has SSL encryption. Any recommended sportsbook by Gambling.com will be vetted and safe.
Look for reviews that describe a simple and streamlined sign up process.
Ensure you look for a sportsbook with the best welcome bonus or promotion. Make sure it’s achievable for your betting strategy and provides enough value to be worthwhile to you specifically.
Look for sportsbooks with specific mobile apps or a responsive mobile site that you can access from your smartphone’s browser. If the sportsbook doesn’t work well when you’re on the go, it might not be a great option for busy bettors.
Many sportsbooks reward their players for being loyal to the brand. Take advantage of their loyalty programs and free bets offered. Many offer VIP clubs, bet insurance, regular bonuses and more.
Ensure that the sportsbook has the payment methods you want to use to make your deposits and withdrawals. Check both, as many sportsbooks will accept certain deposit options, but have different, less plentiful withdrawal options.
The odds can be competitive throughout the industry, so check out different sites and see which sportsbook has the best odds on the sport you want to wager on. Also, if they have a great live betting platform that updates instantly without any hiccups or delays should be a factor.

If you’re new to online sports betting, or sports betting in general and you’re looking for a place to start, we recommend sports you are already familiar with and follow. Canadians are sports fanatics and follow a wide array of sports including NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, golf, tennis, soccer, horse racing and UFC.
For each sport, you will want to pay attention to important headlines that could affect your wager. If an important goal scorer is out with an injury that could affect the wager, as well as other important strategic criteria like weather, opponents, referees and more. Whichever sport you choose to gamble on, be sure to read a preview of the event and know all the options available to you to make your best betting decisions.
